er NN MENSA Storp. How.J Won the Laird’s Daughter. BX DANIEL GORRIE. CHuaAPpTrer II. en nee RS Te NE BOOK & JOB mm i alee ep PRINTI: neatly and expeditiousiy 2 en executed, AT THE“ EXAMINER” OFFICE ¥ Ln \ (di ntrinwcd,.) “ft isan admirable animal, Mr, Barlas,” | replied, always c ireful to avoid giving ofs fence: ‘but the truth is, there is a friend of mine in Edinburgh who is great in horses, and who would pever forgive me if I did not permit bim to make the selec- tion and purchase.” ‘‘Vera weel, doctor—vera weei,” rejoined the landlord, professing contentment, al- though somewhat chagrined. “Ye may get a stronger and mair speerity beast , but tak my word fort yell no get ane to any swer yer purpose better. [ts an extraor- dinar sensible animal, an’ kens a the roads aboot the kintra-side. Inthe dark- est winter nicht ye micht fling the bridle on its neck, and it would bring ye bame to St. Dunstan safe an’ soond. Ye can take avither thocht aboot it, doctor, an’ | mun awa’ an’ gie the beast its supper.” A few weeks after the above confab with the sagacious landlord of the Cross-Keys, I was quietly domiciled in Oakband Cottage, on tbe outskirts of St. Dunstan, and had commenced the routine work of a medical practitioner, Mrs. Johnston was duly in- gtalled as housekeeper ; and a capital rid. ing horse, which Mr. Barlas was compailed to allow ‘‘micht do,” arrived from the met- tropolis. I lked my cottage verry much. It stood apart from the public road, and was quiet and secluded. lows of poplar trees surrounded the green, and flower pots in front, and a tall beachenshedge girdled the sloping garden in the rear. The high banks of the Tweed, adorned with many-tinted foliage, swept along close at hand, and the strong deep gush of | - that noble river was borne sbroad on every gust of wind. Oakbank Cottage was. in my estimation, the sweetest residence in and around St. Dunstan: ani as I, like my predecessor, was fond of florticulture, I resolved to make the piace look hike a |/it- tle paradise when the spring and summer months came round again. I was not long in getting into a good practice. There was not much opposition trom other gen- tlemen in the district, and many miles I] rode both by night and day. It always vexed the heart of my worthy housekeeper, Mrs. Johnson, when a special messenger called me away to a distance after night« fightfall ; and there was no/end to the in- structions she gave me—M. D. though I was—about the best means of preventing sore throats and rhev matisms, Mrs. John- ston had never listened to the learned pres lection of medical professors at any of our universities ; nevertheless, like many other sensible and sedate women, in her own sphere of life, she had managed to pick up no inconsiderable amount of sound medic- al knowledge. I was soon on the best of terms with al the people of the village, for it will gener- ally be found that while a clergyman has admirers and detractors among his own hearers, a doctor who is gifted with a mod- icum of amiability can easily make himself a favorite with allclasses. Uf course, when apy person dies, the friend of the deceased will not un‘requently declaim against the imperfections of the medical treatment ; but grumbli..gs such as these are ,natural and pardonable, and fail to shake the gen. eral esteem in which the practitioner is held. The minister of the parish was a fres quent visitor at Oakbank, and in order to strengthen our good fellowship, | became amember of his congregation. He was an upright and honest hearted man, al« though somewhat too polemical for my taste. I used to think that he wasin the habit of airing his argumentative speeches in my presence before he delivered himself of them at the Presbytery meetings. None of the people in the district seemed better satisfied thau Laird Ramsay o’ the Haugh that I had located myself at St. Danstan. Hecalled one day at Oakbank, soon after my settlement, just as I was about to set out on a rural ride, The Laird was attired in the ordinary dress which he wore at the Haugh. The brown hat, the blue antique coat, the knee breeches, the long gaiters. and the yellow~ striped vest, seemed to forma part of his eccentric character. ‘* Gude day t’ye, Dr. Wilson—gude day,” said the Laird, as he shook me by the hand «“ What way hae ye been sae lang in comin ower my way? I’m wearyin’ sair to get anither firlot o' you queer humoursome stories Oot o' ye. Can ye come ower to the Haugh the morn, and tak a bit check 0 dinner wi’ some freends that I’m just on the road to inveet to meet you, doctor ?” **1¢ will afford me much pleasure, Mr, Ramsay.” ‘* That’s richt—that’s richt. (rie a’ yer patients a double dram o’ medicine the day au that'll save ye trouble the morn. i'll no deteen ye longer i’ the noon, since J see ye’er for takin’ the road. Man, doctor, ail. May [see it?’ “Certain- ly,” said the doctor, whereupon he threw open his closet and revealed the bony structure. Head Lord’s Wharf, / Charlottetown, Nov. 25. 5 The Greatest Medical Discovery since the Creation of Man, or since the Commencement of the Christian Era. There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has deen caused by outward application as the present. It is an undisputed fact that over half of the entire population of the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. DR. MELVIN’S Capsicum Porous PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them, to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than a hundred of the ordinary kird. All other plasters are slow of action, and require to be worn continually to effect a cure; but with these it is entirely dit- ferent: the ‘nstant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physiciansin all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or Jess used as a medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- saaee in a porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful cures effected by Dr. Mernvin’s Capsicum Porous PLASTERS, and their superiority over all other plasters, they now actually prescribe them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, pain in the side and back, and all such cases as have required the use of plasters orliniment. After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and you want a certain cure, ask your druggist for yr. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM PoRDUS PLASTER. You can hardly believe your own convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and quick in its action, you can rely on its safety for the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and other poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture of ordin- ary plasters, One trial isa sufficient guarantee. of its merits, and one plaster will sel. hundreds to your friends, Ask your druggist for Dr. MELVIN’s CAPsI- cuM Porous PLASTER, and take no other; or, on en of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, they will be mailed, post paid, to any address in the United States or Canadas, MANUFACTURED BY THE NOVELTY PLASTER WORKS Lowell, Mass., U.S. A., G.
