Employment Picture Brighter In September, By JOHN LeBLANC Canadian Press Staff Writer OTTAWA ICPI — Canada's un— employment picture brightened a trifle in] September, but it re- mained’ considerably gloomier than a year earlier. There were 271,000 unemployed and looking for work at Sept. 20. the government estimated Tues— day. This was 10,000 fewer than a month earlier. In September of last year — when the c0untry was heading into the heaviest cold weather unemployment since the war — there were just 197,000 unem- ployed, about one—third less than the latest total. The new figures would appear to indicate—at least on a statis- tical basis —— that Canada could be heading into its second suc- cessive post-(war unemployment peak. The top of 590,000 came last March. SLIGHT DECLINE While unemployment m o v e d down slightly between August and September, so did the total of the unemployed, which dropped to 5,888,000 from 6,025,000. This came about largely be— cause of wholesale withdrawals from the labor force of students and other part-time workers en- gaged in now-completed harvest- ing and some food processing op- erations. The September employment to- tal also was down by 51.000 from that of a year earlier. Besides the estimates of unem- ployment and employment—based tics sampling of 30,000 households -—the government also announced that at Sept. 18 there were 327,112 persons registered fol jobs with its National Employment Service. This was down 30,575 in a month but up 71.216 over the year.
