D., Aug. ll). -- The United States naval policy ls unchanged as a result of the col- giililference according to Presiden Coolidge, who today explained the United States position on naval de- fense at the conference with Secre- tary of Navy Wilbur. The conference has failed temper- , srily in the belief of the president. Its failure must not be made the cause of naval competition and so far as his influence can be exerted. the Unitcd States policy will be for the carrying out of the naval pro- gram contemplated before the con- ference met. This government will go on with its moderate naval build- ing program as outlined in his mes- sages and carry out the five year building program to round out the fleet and provide the necessary iight cruisers alid other auxiliary craft. In his opinion the government will continue on _this basis as if the conference had not met. and will build only B-S needed to strengthen the fighting effectiv ess of the ships. The present flil-|l.;l'e he holds does not justify the Uni d States in considering anything beyond its defensive requirements, and it is hisbelief that Unied States senti- ment will not support a demand for auxiliary craft. President Coolidge is still for an agreement as to-auxiliary ships, and has not given up hope that an agreement among the world powers will _be effected. in reasonable time. There may be ii decided reaction in of ,economic causes that maylinduce the countries to favor ii naval treaty along the lines suggested by 'Presi- dent Coolidge in calling the Geneva conference. _ --;€-0>-l- l Hennigan An Easy Winner (Canadian Press) SYDNEY, N.
