Ferguson Industries Limited of Plctou saw additional cost to bring the steel to the Maritimes but a spokesman for the firm add . “we are very interested in the field of steel trawler building — we are trying by every conceivable means to modernize in order to be more competitive." Lunenburg Foundry and En- gineering Limited noted that steel shipyards haven't cashed in on the government offer Federal Subsidy Assisis' Fishing Vessel Indusiry : By DON McLeod HALIFAX (CP) — A federal government subsidy on fishing "‘1 boats construction has been a tremendous shot in the arm for is wooden shipbuilding in Nova Scotia although contracts for steel trawlers are still going out- side the Maritimes. The subsidy—50 per cent of construction costs for vessels over a certain length—was an- nounced last year. Since that time there has been a flood of orders for wooden boats and all larger Nova Scotia yards are booked to c a p a city. Fifteen draggers of 86 feet and larger were ordered during the first seven months of 1962. compared with six draggers for the same period last year. However. the Atlantic Prov- inces Economic Council execu- tive recently approved a study ' to determine what action can be taken to ensure that con- tracts for steel trawlers are placed within the region. The study will attempt to discover why contracts for the vessels LIVESTOCK MONTREAL (CPI —- Prices were steady on the east - end livestock market today. USES STEEL No steel trawlers are cur- ; rently under construction in 1 9 Nova Scotia but two New Bruns- ' wick shipbuilding firms are en- gaged in building them. Pre- mier Robichaud said following the APEC announcement that one of the vessels has been completed and four more are under construction. He said he made the statement “in order to prevent any possible misun- derstanding." “The government has adopted I as a matter of policy. a plan , wherein our fishing industry will be supplied wherever pos— sible with New Brunswick built . vessels." the premier said. He added: “We would be most happy to see our shipyards fill future orders for more of our neighboring provinces and thus retain these contracts within the region." One of the reasons given for the lack of activity in the field in Nova Scotia is the distance from Ontario and Quebec‘s ship- ‘ building - steel production cen— tres.
