Four qlladrupe steel blocks and wires were use-:l in hauling her out ot the water. The dredge's own power and hoisterlng drum were used as n pur- chase instead of capstans as form- erly. This is the first time this dredge has been hauled up since the ponttoon was placed under it three year's ago. Captain MacDonald states- that the dredge was practically fit for noth- ing-but scrap untilthis was done. As the craft lacked buoyancy, being so low in the water that at times he-: decks. was awash and the water pour- ed -through the chain holds, The por- toon's covering of 154 inch plank will need to be replaced next season as the worms have made a perfect network ol,-hoes through it all the way into the poisoned tar paper covering wl]'ch they have left intact. The s-cows, tugs and other Government material have been hauled up in the same dock as tile- dredge. ir' _ LONG DELAYED. _-ST. JOHN. -N. B.. Dec. 5.-Orders have been received from military headquarters asking that n draft of ilfty men and one officer be despatch- ed overserrr at once, from the Now 9 heavy siege battery, now mobollzed at Partridge island. This order it is believed, is due to the fact that a large number of men have fallen in Canadian batteries already at the front-_and these gaps must be filled up aa..soon -as possible. No. 9 hat- tery is perhaps 'one oi' the best train- ed units of its 'kind in Canada, and hence it was this unit which wns call- ed'-upon .to supply the draft needed for reinforcements. p.'*.'_|;~|h '» -sl., 'F I ` APPLIED IN 5 SECONDS Sore, blistering feet# from corn-pinched toes can be cured ' by Putnam's Ex- tractor in 24 hours. .
