Mr. Williams has written the following account of the disaster which was transmitted to New York by wireless). (By Valentine William) ABOARD THE STEAMSHIP WABHING'ION_ ENRJOUTE TO NEW YORK, Oct. 17-(A.P.l-A thousand passengers gathered on the decks of the Washington today watched in agonles of suspense the thrilling rescue of five of six mem- bers of the crew of a seapiane that crashed and sank beside this ship. The tragedy, which occurred at eight o’clock this morning 326 miles off Nantucket, cllmaxed an exciting race between Fox Movie Tone and Paramount News Reel to show films of the Marseille assass- ination, which their representatives were bringing to the United States. Both firms had arranged to dis- patch planes from shore to pick up their films. The Fox plsne, piloted by Marion Graverlberg, was the first to arrive. It was sighted on the horizon at 7:15 a. m- Capt. George Fried went very slowly, trailing ll. tow-line with a bag containing the film, which the plane was to grapple. The plauefs grapple. however, was carried “awayf whereupon the pilot attempted to land on the watch about S00 yards from the ship. The aircraft's right pontoon crashed and it immediately start- ed to sink. There was is heavy swell and the 1,000 eye-witnesses suffered agonies watching the six tiny figures slid- ing about the rapidlly submerging wreckage while the ship‘s boat under Chief Officer Ralph Dooley, labored through rought sells to the scene. The weather was bitterly cold and the swell made the rescue most hazardous. 'Ilhe five survivors boarded the ship unscatched but mechanic Henry Johnson of Brooklyn, N. Y.. was lcd.. He was last seen clinging to li. kaok cushion. His flying suit dragged him down. Special look- outs posted on both masts scanned the sea without locating him, $15, 000,000 Maximum Saving (C. P. By' Gllsrdlsn’s Special Wim) HALIFAX, Oct. 17-Hon. C. P,i Fullerton, chairman of the bourdl of trustees of the Canadian Na-i tional Railways, said here yesterday officers of the railway had inform- ed him that not more than $15,000.-` 000 could be saved yearly through amalgamatiori with the Canadian Pacific Railways. (Reports of his speech at it pri- vate luncheon quoted the chairman last night and today its saying he had been told $50,000,000 might be saved by amalgamation-$25_000,000 less than the estimate of E. W. Beatty, K.C., President of the CPR. This brought forth a vigor- ous denial from Mr. Fullerton.) Even a saving of $15,000,000, Mr. Fullerton said, would be contingent upon “a docile public. who would submit to a wholesale abandonment of lines now serving territories un- cn which industries and settle- ments have been established for 1 Dr. D. , . . WHS Representing 40,000 fishermen and s fishing population of over 800,000, delegates' from many parts of the Maritimes and from the Magdalen Islands met in the board room of the City Building yester- day for the opening sessions cf the fifth annual convention of the Maritime Fishermen’s Association. Busy morning and afternoon ses- sions were held, A further sessionl will be held starting at 9.30 o’clock this moming. I; is anticipated that the convention will conclude by. 1.30 p.m_ I Yesterday momi.ng’s session was occupied with registration of dele- gates, and the reception of reports. The president, Alfred Hanlon. camo, N. s., in his report flamed* it slight gain in membership, an mel-ease in co-operative Purchas- ing and marketing, the valuable assistance received from the Nova swim Marketing Board and the anticipation of the cc-oreratlwl °f similar agencies i.n Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Several informative addresses were delivered at the aftem00D session, which also saw the adop- tion of a. number of lmP0ft&T\t T9' solutions. . Afternoon Bedon At the afternoon session Major D- H. sutlrerland, chief suoervlwf of Fisheries for the Maritime Prov- inces, mke briefly. He congratu- lated the firmer-men on rl year 01 real progress. He ako called atten- glqn to the fact that the downward trend in file fishing industry seems to have been reached' at the endl of lust year. Every branch of the fishing industry has shown im- provement since the first of the year. In fkuros this increase rep- resents something like $l,300.000 more' money in the hands of fish- emien at the end of August this year than at the same Dflriod last year. The speaker stressed the great importance of the lobster in- dustry to Maritime fishermen and mentioned briefly the entire re- vision of regulations covering fishing in the Maritime Provinces. He mentioned also the visit during the past summer of the Deputy Minister of 1"irhlar'les. In reference to illegal fishing, and in particular illegal lobster fishing, M8101' Slith- erland stated that in most sections the situation is well in hand, On three quarters of the coast the regulations are observed almost 100 per cent. In certain miter districts time people do not stand behind the regulations with the result that a great deal of illegal fishing is practiced. The speaker considered that the economic conditions, which we have been experiencing. have something to do with illegal fish- ing. B Firm director of the the next speaker. He stated that anything his Department can do for ille fishing industry must sillrt with the fishermen individually. He stated that the function of the government is to be coristrlictlve. Hc stressed thc fact that when the Department discovers how it can be-st assist fishermen from "catch-‘ ing to distribution in the whole-l sale market," the fishing industry can be developed to n great extent. The fishing industry, he thought. is probably the most backward of any. especially in regard to new processes. Dr. Firm considers the many years." (Continued cn Page 8) Erowcls Cath (By Charles M.
