A sailor employed onthe steamer Lans- downe, on Saturday night, while attempt- ing to board his vessel, fell’ over the wharf head first, his head striking the rail of the vessel, and is believed to have been killed instantly. He then fell between the wharf and vessel, and his body was recovered this morning. His name is Peter Brophy, at one time a soldier, and is said to havea brother in Halifax. He had been drinking heavily for the past few days. Postoflice Robbery. Orrawa, Aug. 48. The postoffice department has recgived word from Victoria, B. C., that a regtster- ed letter sent from Wellington to Victoria, containing $850, never reached its destina- ation. There is no clue whatever to how or where it was missed. The amount was government money, and was addressed to postoffice authorities in Victoria. Sharon-Hill Divorce Case. ¥an Francisco, Aug. 18. In July the Supreme Court of California reversed the decision of the Superior Court in the Sharon-Hill divorce case, ang f- manded the case jor a new trial. Mrs, Lemy applied for a rehearing before the Supreme Court to have the order fora new trial set aside, and the Supreme Court has now refused her application. No One to Say Good Bye. New York, Aug. 18. Eben 8. Allen, Ex-President of the 42nd Street Railroad Company, who was sentenced Friday to 14 years in prison, was removed to Sing Sing yesterday morn- ing. He presented a sad appearance. There were no friends to see him off or say good bye. A Rich Man Dead. Paris, Aug, 18. William Shaw, Vice-President of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, and oné of the most prominent railroad men in America, is dead. He is ‘reputed to be worth $200,000,000 and was a philanthro- pist.
