Our friends, the Opposition, are dread- fully exerciked about the $312,000; and the Patriot*has stivceeded, by an arithmet ical process, al! its in figuring this somewhat lary down ‘to almost nothing. The $189,000 voted for the Cape Traverse Railway will not, it cays, be expended this year. But, the money has, at all events, been granted by the Parliament of Canads; own, Linn: and the country stands committed to the| carrying out of & great w rk, which will, when completed, be an incalculable benetit to this Provinee—affording a route and | means of transit for the expért of oenr pro- duce, as well as fr the transport of mails | and passengers to ail parts of th American continent, which will be shorter by. hundreds of miles, cheap ery im. the, aggregate, by millions | of dollars, and very much less dangerous | means which we are From this point thaa the rout: and at present ferced to take. of view th@ grant of $189,000 is the very | smallest part of the advantage this Is!and has gained in the adoption by Parliament of a policy involving the construction of a line of railway via Capes Traverse and Tormen tine and of the Chignecto Ship Railway. But, says the Patriot, the $65,000 for rolling stock for the P. E, Railway wili not be expended in this [sland ! amount, then, be of no advantage to the Island ! this question consist with the Patriot's ideas about political economy ? And how does the Patriot know that the rolling st: manufactured in Kingston! Perhaps it will be obtained somewhere in the United States, in which will, of all right! In point of fact we believe that case it courae ba quite a large proportion of the amount is to be laid ont in the Prevince, and will thus, in addition to giving us the additional faci hties we require, be a very material benefit to our mechanics and to all classes in the Province. The, Patriot, it will be remarked, says | not a word about the other amounts which have been granted for the purpose of making improvements in this Province—} not a word abcut the 25,000 voted for pub- lic buildings in Sommersice; not a word about the $3,500 voted for the improvement of Rustico Harbor; not a word about the $4,000 to be expended in finishing up Campbell’s Cove Breakwater: nota word about the $5,000 to be expended on Murray River, South Rustico ; not a werd about the $6,000 to be expended for a breakwater at North St. Peter's Bay ; not a word about the $5,000 to he laid ont in New London, or the $3,000 at Wood the $5,000 at Cascumpec, or the $3,500 for & steamer to ply between Charlottetown, Halifax and Murray Harbor! Its reeders in these localities will, Aoubtless, be sur- rised—pleasantly surprised —when they now that the Patriot failed to give them the good news. It shall not, however, be said that Tue Examiyer has, in this regard, failed in its! duty to its.readers ; and we again submit the fall list of grants, as follows :— For Public Buildings in Summer. Now, Sir Leonard Tilley, in his recent speech, tells with sume degree of particu | larity where the money has gone, and the intellicent reader will ece that he is right in his derlaration. The increased es- penditures have been caused, for instance, in part by the increase of $45,000 000 in the public debt, caused by Sir Richard | Cartwright., Then , there has beeu the purchase of 127 miles of ‘railway to coim- ple the chain of communication of the Intercolonial, a purchase which was in sngurated in 1878 by Mr. Mackenzie; and this cost $1,500,000, besides expenditures for rolling stock.
