12 HAPDY BIRTHDAY NHSI‘I NHS CELEBRATES TENTH ANNIVERSARY. In the late 19605 a small group of field naturalists based at Prince of Wales College conducted one or two informal field trips. These people, however, néver formally organized into an association. It was Ruth Ross, a participant in the P.W.C. group, who provided the spark which led to the founding of the present society. After contacting a number of potential members, Ruth placed a notice in the newspaper inviting interested persons to attend an organizational meeting. The gathering was held October 23, 1969, in an upstairs room at the Y.M.C.A.. That evening 18 people joined the newly formed Natural History Society of Prince Edward Island. The program consisted of a slide talk "Here Only the Sea Shall Speak", presented by Robert Gray of P.E.I. National Park. A week later, on November lst, the group went on its first field trip, a bird watching expedition to Clark's Pond in Cavendish. .
