that investigations into what is
called “spirit-uaiism" are just one
branch of a. larger study. The
Society for Psychical Research
has been formed for t-he purpose
ot' enquiring into alleged “abnor-
mal” happenings, such as hypnot-
ism, cliairvoyauce, 'telepu.tliy, veri-
d-l-cnl dreams, and many other
psychic oddities of which-from
the very earliest times-there had
been persistent report. Sonic ot
these tales were of the kind
which used to be associated with
witchcraft, and which had in the
modern aige been generally dis-
missed as cases of conscious and
deliberate -fraud. _'Some others
such as the alleged apparitions of
persons deceased, were explained
away his mere delusion. But it
had been .felt in many quarters
that alter we have discounted n
these two grounds a vast number
of such reports, there remain at re-
sidue which we cannot thus dis-
miss unless we are determined to
disbelieve a-li suclh evidence in ad-
vance. in view of the chance
that even the most firmly estab-
lisiied general rule on such mut-
ters niny prove to have been mis-
teikcn, -it was thought. that a fur-
liher scrutiny in-to the whole iiold
should not be refused. The Brit-
ish Society for Pi-iychsical Re-
search, including in its ineniber-
