and there are rainbow weddings now

driven earth-boring machine which
makes an everage boring time per
hole of one and one=half to two min-
utes. The equipment is mounted one
a horse drawn truck and is operated
by two men. In ordinary soil it main-
tains an average of 100 holes per day.

efforts of the organized labor heads
to hold the men in check until author-
ltative and official strike votes can be

Shopmen everywhere throwing
down their tools in premature strike,
it. was reported, were threatening nn-
tlonal industry, because, without them
the railroads’ equipment cannot be
kent in usuable order at the most ne-
cessary oi’ all times-crop-moving sea-

Above that hovered the threat of un
even more serious labor situation, the
demand of all the organized railroad

NEW YORK, August 7.-Au indict-’
ment charging manslaughter was read
yesterday to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew
Walker, Christian Scientists, of No.
889 South Sixteenth Street, Newark.
The bill returned last week' by the
grand jury, is based on the death of
the couple's daughter, Dorothy, eight
years old, on May 4th last. The
Walkers pleaded not guilty and Judge
Strlckel fixed their bail at 2,500 each,
but reduced it to $1,500.
During the chlid'g illness from diph-
theria over a ten days period preced-
ing her death. it is alleged, she receiv-
ed no medical treatment, but was
treated by Christian Science healer.
_ The indictment charges in language
that is usual to indictments that Mr.
and Mrs, Walker, “one Dorothy Walk-
er, in the peace of God and of this
State then and there being felouloua
ly did kill and slay.” Judge Martin.

District Attorney Harrison believes
that when the case comes to trial the
defence will be represented by a large
array of rzouncil and will _have the
backing of the Christian Science mo-
ther church ln nn endeavor to have
its doctrines and principles justified in
law.

the urgent request for furs we felt
that it would be greatly to the interest
of our shippers as well as to the buy-
ers to change our sale date from the
15th of September to the 10th of
Septemberf
This disnrrangcs our plans to some
extent, but we are always glad to re-
spond to the requirements and best
interests of the entire industry when-
ever it is possible for us to do so.
We ure informed that the Russian
Government recently placed certain
restrictions on thy shipment' of.furs
out of Russia. which will naturally cur-
tnil the quantities expected from that
I source.
Now that peace is practically declar-
ed nnd the embargo on shipments to
Germany and her allies lifted. a new
source of demand may be expected
from those quarters, and as the prin-
cipnl supply will be in this market,
we have reason to expect liberal
orders in our coming Fall Sale from
that part of Europe which has been
closed for the past five years.

ST. JOHN, August 7.-The feature
proposal this morning concerning dec-
orations for the celegrations on Aug-
ust 14 and 15, was that small spruce
trees be used to line the route which
the Prince ‘will take. It is suggested
that rt tree be nailed to each post

test the effect, several trees will be
procured and the scheme given u

It is also suggested that evergreens

captain of the engineers, and was
announced by him yesterday in an
official bulletin of the Ministry ofI
Posts and Telegraph.
If a. person at one end of the tele-
phone wlre desires to communicate
a secret message to someone at the
other end, with absolute certainty
that neither _intentional tapping of
the 'wfre noi' their accidental cross-
ing would enable anyone to pickup
the conversation, he needs only to
attach the new apparatus to the
telephones which are in communica-
tion, and talk. _
Anyone “listening in” would, of
course, hear conversation, but it
would be unintelligible and strange.
Briefly, this is how' it works: An ap-
paratus which is composed of u
voice transmitter something like u
telegraphic current transmitter,
systematically deform; the telc-
phonio currents as they are pro-
duced atthc sending end and re-
forms them at the receiving end, re-
storing thir normal intensity. Per-
fect hearlng und understanding is
possible only at the two ends of
the wire.
The apparatus is a very delicate
and complicated affair, and was in-
tended by the inventor for use at
the battle-front. Experiments were
being made nt grand headquarters
when the armistioe was declared.
For the present it is likely the Ibenc-
fits of the invention will be reserved

of the Foreign Relations Committees.

Peace Treaty is concerned, was to-_
day foreshadowed by one‘of the pro-
minent lterublican members. The
senator states that the committee
cannot proceed without certain docu-
ments, chiefly the American draft oi'
the covenant of the League of Na-
tions, which the President has been
roqucsted to forward to this body,
but which have not been received.
On the ot_he_r hand, l am informed
that the President cabled Premier
(llemenceau, asking him not to sub-
mit these documents to the French
Chamber of Deputies, and this re-
quest was complied with. Untler
these circumstances it is not prob-
able that Wilson will give the Sen-
ate what they have demanded.
lf the committee claims that it
cannot proceed with the consideration
of the treaty without. the documents,
_which will show how certain decisions
were arrived ot, at deadlock will en-
sue,
Under these circumstances the de-
cision would be left to the Senate it-
self, and the big fight would take
place on thc flour. By a majority
vote the Senate could luke the treaty
out ofthe hands of the committee.
