He says the day was splendid and that a large number of people were present, The 3-minute race was won by Seott Act; Mr. L. Hayden's horse took the green race, and James Griffin's horse the run- ningrace. The latter event, he says, was amusing, the drivers being barefooted and hatless, and going through strange feats of horsemanship. The dancing and refresh- ment saloons were well patronized. Judging very irom the remarks with which our correspon- dent closes his letter, the Scott Act does not pen to be any better enforced in Montague West than in Charlottetown. > ~ Two Indians who had imbibed sufficient ot the ardent to ‘‘ make glad come,” boarded the train for Souris yesterday afternoon. HERE WE ARE AGAIN TWO RAILWAY DISASTERS: [Specran Despateires ro Thx EXAMINER. } ON THE INTERCGLONIAL. Loss of Life and Property. HOW THE ACCIDENTS OCCURRED, St. Jonny, N. B., Sept, 24. Two disastrous accidents have ocurred on the Northern Division of the Intercol- onial Railway within a few hours -of each other, one on Thursday last in which one life was lost, two engines badly if nut to- tally wrecked ; and the other early yester- day moruing, in which a combination ex- press and baggage car was tutally destroyed by tire, with all the express freight and three mail bags, besides twenty.five pieces of baggage. : A passenger on the Quebec express says : ‘“On Thursday the accommodation train, Conductor Nivin, which left Point Levis that morning for Campbellton, collided with a special train from Campbellton, this The trains had or- Gers to cross, but the accommodation left Little Metis on time, forgetting all about their crossing orders. When one and a half miles beyond, running through along snow shed, on a heavy down grade, along came the special making for Little Metis to cross the accom- modation. The trains went full force into one another, wrecking the engines beyond repair. L. Duncan, of Campbellton, driver of jthe special, was instantly killed. Gorman. driver of the accommodation, was only slghtly hurt, but his fireman sus- tained serious injury and is not expected to recover The Quebec express, due here yesterday morning, was about ten hours late. She received orders at St. Flavie to proceed to Little Metis and transfer passengers, bag- gage, etc., ww a special sent out from Campbellton. The work of — trans- ferring was immediately commenced but the delay in the special sent out from Campbelton made it 11 o'clock before the express once more moved On its way to St. John. Fifty miles had been covered, when suddenly the bell rang for an immediate stoppage of the train, and = on the conductor looking out to as- certain the cause of the stop a big blaze was seen issuing from the baggage car. The burning car was quickly un- coupled from the rest of the train and the engine went tu Causapscal for aid, returniug with several section men. They made a strong fight to extingush the fire, but were compelled to abandon it. The value of the goods destroyed cannot be estimated at present. Editor O'Brien's Case. Cork, Sept. 23. When the case of William O’Brien opened to-day, several policemen testified frou memory as to his (O’Brien’s) language which they asserted tended to incite the listeners to violence. During the hearing a procession armed with sticks, and headed by a band, marched into town from the country and took up a position close to the court room. Mr. Harrington declared that a deliberate attempt had been made to sup- press Constable O’Sullivan’s report of Mr. O'Brien's speech. Mr. Carson said the observation of Mr. Harrington was a pure fabrication. Mr. Harrington said, *‘ You lie.” Magistrate Eaton said such remarks could not be allowed, and if repeated Mr. Harrington would be re- moved from the court. An excited crowd followed the car in which Mr. O’Brien was taken back to prison, hooting and yelling at the soldiers, who had fixed bayonets. The Scott Act Elections. Ottawa, Sept. 23.
