I s The Guardian, Charlottetown, Tues. Jan. 21, 1904. SPORTS FRONT By PIUS CALLAGIIAN Looking For Explanation EVERYBODY is still looking for In explanation of that 11-0 u-iutm-ph scored by Boston Bruins over Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night. g ' Mind you the fact that Bruins beat Leafs_ doesnt any exp‘:anat.ion. They have managed to do this before season and they'll likely accomplish the feat some more before the rczular season draws to a close.’ However, the matnnenin \\'lIlL'l‘l Toronto dropped this one left Just about everybodty with his mouth wide open. Indeed the loss is one that surely should rate some invest- igation. both by Leafs‘ management and by president Camp- bell's oliice. The paying customers surely werent giveii_I break on this affair. Leafs did nothing right during the entire netting and of course Boston couldn't make any mistakes. After falling behind 5-0 to New York Wednesday evening and then almost pulling the game out of the fire. you would think Leafs would haw lcarned a hard lesson. Today they trail Chicago by three points and with I pair of homo victories over Rangers and Bruins they could have held top spot in these league stand- lngs. THERE .~|lI'9l_\' must be something wrong in the Leaf‘: camp. Just what is taking place seems hard to find out but it's a safe bet to say that everybody isn't happy. The Bower- lmlach incident got a lot of publicity and many figured that Boner wasn‘l really hurt at all. 9 were inclined to think this way but when Johnny didn't return after that I1-0 sheIlack- HIE \\e (‘()'n('lll(l0 he must be really on the injured list. After all Leafs flew former Charlottetown lslaiider. Al Milla-r, in for Sunday's game at Chicago but Al's plane never did touch down. As a tit. Simmons was put into action once again atid this time Don blanked the league leaders 20. If Bower vras hralthy. we are certain the Leafs’ front office wouldn't stand idly by and let e club 0fLl‘0W away I chance to again grab top place. Simmons Was Goat AT any rate, Simmons was surely made die goat In Toronto Saturday night. It was indeed I rough night for the veteran nctminder. After all. you can't blame Simmons for any feud at may have taken place. He's a standby goalie and goes be- tween the pipes when he‘: told to do so. He has given Leafs‘ excellent service in the past and it's hardly fitting that there should be any resentment against him. Perhaps there isn't but Saturday's game screams for some kind of a logical explanat- to need this l‘£‘SI n. we aren't trying to take anything away from Boston. They definitely are showing signs of coming alive and more power to their wheel. As we said they can beat Toronto and any other club on certain nights. But this ll-0 stuff Is strictly ‘for the birds.’ Surprise Sunday Night BL'T if there was trouble in the Leafs’ camp. it apparently was dispelled Sunday night. in Chicago where the Imlac blanked Bobby Hull and his associates 2-0. It was the second ’ he pacesctters and had the Cliicago licking their sores. Talk of disimity is heard every- where. Rumors of Imlach going are prevalent. They try to take in a minor league goalie for this big one with Cbticago. His plane doesn't make it and they are ‘stuck’ with Simmons who was beaten 11 times the previous night. It's not a rosy picture. You could have visions of I most dismal Maple Leafs’ dressing room. You could have Ideas in your mind of sullen players who really didn’t care what hap- pened. Perhaps the Hawks thought they'd meet that kind of I team. If they did. they were great] ris. . Lcaf-s came out fighting, quickly showing the Hawks that they intended making I game Two second period goals - Toronto was all the scoring for the evening as Leafs con- quered 2-0. What’: The Answer? WE can't figure the whole thing out and if you can. by Ill means get in touch with its and we'll pass the news on to our anxious readers. Folks are just I bit bewildered with recent l1aiDptt;n'ln2)S and they'd welcome the truth right from the horse‘: m-on . Honestly. we are just Is bewildered Is anyone over these happenings. That blanking of Chicago after the humiliation by Boston surely throws everything into I real muddle. PTI1-'=|=P6 You have the whole thing figured out by now. If you have. let's have the lowdown.
