He had seen Reddy For catch one of his small brothers and carry him off. it was all because that small brother had carless. lie had moved when he should have kept per- fectly still. in doing this he mov- ed one of the big brown leaves under which he had been hiding Beddy had seen that leaf move and had known just what it meant. He had pounced and the careless chick was caught. Chickie had learned two things all in one dreadful moment. He had learned fear. and that a Fox ,- was an enemy to be watched for I at all times. They were two les- i sons he would remember all his i life. They were two lessons he knew he had learned. There was a third lesson just as important that be had had for the first time without knowing it. it was the value of obedience. All the chicks had been told over and over when playing the game of hide not to move until mother called them. That small brother had moved and Reddy caught him. As soon as Reddy Wig out of sight Mother Grouse. a very. very worried mother. appeared and elucked softly. Instantly nine iittls Grouse popped out of bid- ing and ran to her. She led them away from there as fast as their small legs could run. some of them hadn't seen what had happened. but fear is catch- ing. and now all were afraid. Chickie was the smallest but he was the smartest From that day he learned fast. He watch- ed Mother and took care to nev- er lag too far behind or to wan- der off too far to one side or the other. and never to run ahead of Mother. He was quick to learn that she knew best and to ” do just what ghs told them to do. They met Jimmy Skunk and mother signalled hide. Chickie knew that he would never trust a black and-white cost. Late one after- noon Bobby Coon ambled down the Crooked Little Path. Chickie had iust time for a good look at hlin when the hide signal sound- ed. Never again would Chickie allow anyone with a ringed tail and wearing a black mask get near him. Uncf Billy Possum looked too slow and lazy to be danger- ous, but Mother gave the hide signal.
