Farmers’ Battles Let me say to our farmers: We will endeavour to fight your battles with regard to coarse grain freight rates. grain elevator, cold storage facilities. Incom'e Tax grievances, and in fact will go all out in your behalf. I am sure it was a grievous dis- appointment to all farmers and indeed to everyone to hear the Federal Minister of Agriculture. Rt. It is rather discouraging to hear the [production raised in the high and ycxpenslve point it has now reach- e:i. make such a statement. It was not the part of a statesman to tell the farmers "You can settle your own problems of coarse grain feed. You need not depend on the West. You can grow your own." This is great consolation to the many farmers who are drowning or slaughtering young pills at the present time because they cannot afford to go further in the hole finnnciafly. This Party pmposes to go much fur- ther as you will see when you read our Platform. The farmers are de- serving of more assistance and their existence as a profession is now seriously jeopardized. On the other hand, the Govern- ment's own record in farming is a most deplorable one. In 193B, Messrs. Jones, Barbour, W. F. A. Stewart. William Hughes and JA. Campbell were loud in their de- nunciation of the management of Faiconwood Par-m. Hon. Mr. Bar- bour was the most specific in his criticism. He declared on the floor of the House that $20,000 could be saved in the management of Fal- conwood. Those gentlemen were then back benchers under the Campbell regime; this was in 1938. in that year the expenditure on Falconwood was $132,669. In 1946. those same gentlemen are the chief members of the Government —Premier, Minister of Public Works, Minister of. Agriculture. and Provincial Treasurer —and last year they spent on Falconwood $203,799, —jusi: $81,000 more than the expenditure they strongly criti- cized in 1938. Page Mr. Barbour and ask him uhai. about the $20,000. a year you were going to save on Falconwoodl instead of the saving of $20,000. they have spent on an average oi $34,000 a year more than in 1938, the year criticized. . All Parties in Parliament were in agreement that it was not enough, and Pre- mier Drew of Ontario has had his Government increase Old Age Pen- sions to $35.00 a month, doing this Provincially. Old people are asking about their $5.00 a month increase going back to April. now amount- ing to six month's increase or $30. each. The suggestion is quite cur- rent now that this increase ls being held in this Province to be paid on the eve of the Provincial election. _ It is my firm conviction that in the Maritime Provinces we could make good progress by the three Maritime Premiers working together and presenting an united front. I know this can be done because it was done in 1933-1935 by Hon. A. L. Macdonald, Prem- ier of Nova. scotla, Hon. L. Til- ley, Premier of New Brunswick, and myself as Premier of Prince Edward Island. This cooperation and united effort by Maritime Premiers is not in evidence today and we are suffering in the Mari- Limes as a result. Further, ,and I 11m sorry to say, I have been given to understand that the fault is largely due to our own Premier Jones who does not work in cooperation with the Premiers oi Nova. Scotla and New Brunswick. This ls regrettable be- cause we all stiffer, and any pub- lic man is foolish who does not beiievepln cooperation and practice it, because no Premier can play a lone hand and make a success for his own Province. It has been my privilege and duty to represent Charlottetown and Royalty in the Legislature ior twenty years and I hope to repre- sent them for another term, and vance. During the past few years, a great many new homes have been built on the outskirts of the City. such as Parkdale and other places. One of the great problems for those new settlers is that of s. supply of pure water because wells are suspicious and dangerous. On coming to power our Government will do everything possible in com- pleting arrangements so that those people will be supplied with good pure water. - Mr. MscKlnnon Corrected NLr. Dugald MacKinnon said "It was a. Liberal Government that first created a Health Department in this Province." Mr. MacKin- non knows better. Why not give the facts? A Liberal Government passed the Statute, then did noth- ingdo implement it. Under the Stowarl-MocMlllah Government, 1 was appointed the first Minister of Public Health and also of Educa- tion for Prince Edward Island.‘ I organized the Public Health De- partment and started treatment rlinlcs (or vcncrcal disease in Charlottetown and in Summerside. Under Education, Mr. MacKin- non said "The Government has placed in all the outlying pogtlons of the Province High Schools within reasonable distance-oi every student, u-hcro they may acquire n course of studies they formerly had to go lo the Prince of Wales Colleze to get.“ Such fictlonl Let Mr. MacKinnon awake from his dream and point out even one of those High Schools he mentions. Mr. itfacKinnon in his speech referring to the financial grants awtainezi by the MacMilian Gov- ernment in 1934 said: "'I‘hey just "The purest form in rchich tobacco cart be smoked " weer CAPORAL CIGARETTE!» LADIES’ as cvrrn mile. that ws.s given to every Pre- vlnce in Canada and they did not have to ask for it." Mr. MacKln- non knows better as he has heard it many times since 1984. The facts are: The MacMillan Gov- ernment recclved $5.500. pag- mile or. the highway between Charlotte. town. and Borden. or in other words on 46 miles oi road, and the total grant was $230,000, Besides this, the Bennevt Gov- ernment buiit nearly two miles of concrete road from Borden to Carleton Comer and paid the total cost of nearly $50,000. Also, the Bennett Government gave $10,000 a mile on the Rustice Road; or ior 10 miles the grant was $100,000. And it is well to re- member it was the Bennett Gov- ernment gsve the first grant of 890.000. for the so-called man; tyre highway. Why does Mr. MacKinnon say every Province was treated the some? They were not treated the same. On the trons-Canada high» way the other Provinces received only 50c per man day. That is the difference. It. shows what the MacMiilan Government obtained in preferential treatment for this Province. Time does not permit me to dis- cuss our many Provincial problems in full as I would like to do. I would like to deal with the silly idea of the Jones Government. giv- ing out financial statements on current expenditure indicating paper surpluses while ignoring vast ‘mounts in capital and going greatly in debt year after year.
