ROCK & ROAR With VARSITY ATHLETICS Last week's results: Field Hockey: September 11 & 12, 1998 The UPEI Field Hockey Team played in St. Mary’s on the weekend, only to end up with two ties. On Friday evening the lady panthers played to a scoreless draw with the St. Mary Huskies with extensive help from fourth year full back Janna Coade. Coade, due to her strong defensive play, was named player of the game. On Saturday, the Panthers scored a late goal, with ten minutes remaining, to tie the Huskies at 1-1. Anne-Marie MacDonald, a fourth year Arts student scored for the Panthers. Cheryl McQuillan and Holly Boswall, both fourth year Science students, showed their experience and talent as both played very well for the Panthers. Soccer: September 12 & 13, 1998 The women’s and men’s soccer teams hosted Acadia on Saturday and travelled to Moncton on Sunday. On Saturday, the Lady Panthers defeated the Acadia Axettes 1-0 ona goal from the talented Trina Byrne. Although Gina Newson, very deservingly, was named player of the game for her strong offensive play, it is important to mention some of the other key players including Trina Byrne, Sherri Gallant, rookie Maria Barna, and goalkeep Kim Beaton who helped to solidify the win. In men’s action, the UPEI men ended up on the unlucky side of the stick with a 2-1 loss to the Acadia Axemen. The men played a strong game with Ryan O’Connell scoring the lone goal for the panthers. The player of the game was Jarret MacPhee of Acadia who is actually from PEI. On Sunday the Lady Panthers played to 1-1 tie with UdeM. Stephanie MacEachern scored the lone goal for the Panthers, while Kim Beaton provided a solid goal. In then’s action, UPEI defeated UdeM 3-2. UPEI goal scorers were John Sutton, and Ryan O’Connell. Varsity Action this Weekend This weekend the Women and Men Soccer Panthers will be hosting Memorial on Saturday September 19/98 at 2:00pm and 4:00pm respectively. On Sunday the Panthers will be hosting the Dalhousie Tigers at | :00pm (women’s) and 3:00pm (men’s). UPEI/Subway Athletes of the week profile Female: Kim Beaton - Wemen’s Seccer The fourth-year senior keeper enjoyed two strong games allowing only | goal during a great opening weekend for the young Panther squad. The Women’s soccer team beat Acadia 1-0 on Saturday while playing toa 1-1 tie with UdeM on Sunday afternoon. With timely offence and solid defence backstopped by Beaton, a business major, the Panther Women's soccer team are a team to watch. Male: Ryan @’Connell - Men's Soccer Third-year striker Ryan O’Connell provided timely offence for the Men’s Soccer this past weekend. O’Connell, a computer science major, scored the only Panther goal during a tough 2-1 loss to Acadia on Saturday. On Sunday O’Connell scored the game winning goal as the Men Panthers defeated UdeM. Ryan O’Connell was named the Male AUAA Athlete of the Week by the AUAA because of his play on the weekend.
