CHRYSLER CORPORATION OF CANADA, IIMIIED PARIS DIVISION WINDSOR, ONTARIO i.r'riL'E's'F6iEr preity disheartened group of Abegweit rugbyists that It was a walked off the playing field at Glace Bay on Saturday afternoon following a close 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Caledonian Club from that centre in McCurdy Cup play- off competition. Their frame of mind was not the result. of the de- feat either, or at least only prim- arly so. It was the management. and ieamls dissatisfaction with the relereeing and general lack of sup- ervision that wranklcd. . . . And you can take it from one who was there and saw what went on, that they were more than within their rights in feeling the way they did. It was about as lax a piece of officiating that man ev- er witnessed. An old saying ”there is something putrid in Peru” would probably describe the situation ad- equately in a minimum amount of words. . . . . By saying that, there is no in- tent to cast any reflection on the Glace Bay team itself. They were out there playing rugby and mak- ing a good job of it too, and were no more responsible for what went. on than were the visitors, although they didn't give any backing to the protests by those of the losing cause. . . . What was the big Issue? It was the calling of the game by the of- ficlal referee when the Abbie team and management had every right to believe that there was still 12 minutes of playing time left in the final half. At least that was the time left to he played as recorded by A J . McAd- a.m's stop watch at the time the game was called. Mr. McAdam, as an unbiased spectator who accom- panied the Abbie team on the trip. had been asked by the presiding referee to act as unofficial timer. There was no debating the end of the first half time when Abbies lead the period by a 2-0 score, but. was a. different story in the final half. I Taking the advantage in the play for the first time in the game early in the final half, the Glace Bay team went over for B. try to make the score read 3-2 in their favor. In the opinion of the two Abegweit coaches, Lt.-Col. W. J. MacDonald and Gordon Bennett, the score was made on "a play that resulted in three offside passes be- fore it was completed." 0 0 O 0 c However, that was apparently not the opinion of the referee. as no whistle was blown to indicate it as such. And in view of this fact, the said coaches were content to let it go at that. But later in that same half when Abbies again started to show superiority in the tenrliory play and were in a position from where they threatened to score, it was more than they could take when the game was culled 12 min- run. to 5 p.in. Mr. A. J. McAdam of Saint. Forcing the play right from the opening whistle, the Abbies kept the play deep into Caledonians ter- ritory with hard pressing attacks that kept the opposition continua";- ly in trouble and came within an ace of scoring in the early part of utes short of their recorded time. Confronting the said referee with these "minor details" he accorded the Abbie officials the full extent of his courtesy by striding from the field in a highly unconcerned manner, that to say the least, left them in a thoroughly disgusted attitude with the whole situation. so much so in fact, that they didn't even deem it worthy to tender an officlal..p.rotest. to Mc- GUARDIAN.
