In connection with the ministerial appointments announced this week, says the London Canadian Gazette, the Daily News has published a definite statement to the effect that the Earl of Aberdeen will succeed Lord Stanley of Preston as Governor-General of Canada on the ex- piry of the latter’s term of oliice. There is every reason to believe that this state- ment accurately represents Mr. Glad- stone’s wishes with regard to the Gover- nor-Generalship, and there can be equally little doubt that should this appointment be made in due course it would beer- tremely well received both in this coun- try and in the Dominion, for Lord Aber- deen is qualified for the post by personal knowledge of and personal interest in Canadian affairs, by much tact and bonhomic, and by real and keen sympathy with many forms of philanthropic work. It is practically an open secret that his own wishes and predilections are strongly forthisparticularpoeitiou; audit willbe fortunate both br him and, we believe, also for Canada, if his_desiresarethus gratified whmi Lord Stauley'sservice in the Dcninisn ceases. Lord Aberdeen, we may add, was born in 1847, succeeded to the title in 1870, and was Viceroy of Ireland from February to July, 1886. The Scott Act and Prohibition: The Examiner reproduces, and of course with approval, an article from the Men- trealGazetteon t.heScott Act,iu which the Gazette, after telling of the repeal of the Act in different localities says:— “ Inellicisnt _enforcement,/ flgh —-i-I1- -“puny to aw‘. in I "to secure x existin uatso ' “aéeiwithout doubgthe unfit;-"lite mun this state of afiirs, which, in so far as it represents a going back in the cause oftemperanceisamatter ofregret.” Th's is truly refreshing in the columns of the Examiner. But it is quite in place. The Examiner has shown not only a wonderful “ incapacity to devise methods to improve public opinion," but a marked capacity to devise methods to distort public opinion. We have fre- quently regretted this “so f.ras itre- presented a going back in the cause of temperance” an the part of our cou- temporary and of those for whom it speaks. It is much to be regretted that with the increasing danger of annihilation with which public abhorrence threatens the saloon the present Roman Catholic clergy at the palace have stepped back from the aggressive temperance crusade which enlisted the energies of their pre- dsceaors, and that, discountenanced by an overwhelming public opinion, the saloon keepers have again found solace in the comforting words of the clergy of the Holy Roman Church. But there is no going back on the part of the great bulk of the community. Temperance senti- ment is improving year by year. The saloon can never savor in the nostrils of our people of anything but the very atmosphere of Hell. -—-—-€>O<}-—-—- ' To Conole with Labouchere. Lozcnox, Aug. 27.——A meeting of Mr. IAbouchere’s constituents was held in N or thamptou Thursday to discuss his exclus- ion from Gladstone's Cabinet. The mayor presided, andststedthat men whohad chosen Mr. Iabouchers torepresent them in parliament would protest against the queen's interference with the of Mr. Gladstone’s colleagues in the cabinet. This statement elicited the fact that the meeting had been packed partially with Tory howlers. While cheered ' and ap- plauded by the majority of those present, abontfimmen at the sides anl rear of the hall shouted derisively and called up- on the mayor to sit down. The police were called in, and, after about 10 minutes’ uproar, they restored order. The resolution of regret that Mr. Iasbouchere had been excluded was read, but could hardly be heard arid the hisses, groans and stamping on the outskirts of the audience. Several heads were broken and three men were asrried out uncon- scious by their friends. Eventually the P0!!! took advantage a temporary lull, floated the question with all the power of hhhnga, and the resolution fly 3 -large majority.
