Lhe Ltr Lf, The Search for the Green Laurie Murphy — Financial Aid Advisor Tuesday (1:30-3:30pm) Hello again! Are you gradu- ating this year or next? If so, I urge you to continue reading this article and to also read Professor Falvo’s article concerning gradu- ate school. No matter what your field of study here at UPEI, there are continuing higher education Friday programs at Masters and Doctor- ate levels for discipline specializa- tion. The reason. why I’m dis- cussing this topic here is be- cause there are opportunities for you to receive money by engag- ing in post graduate work. Be- lieve me when I tell you that many UPEI graduates received big bucks to attend graduate pro- grams either through entrance scholarships, national and local monies, or through the valuable © work experience of assistantships. Think about graduate school and then talk to me if you like, or with an Arts Award -Officer, of department chair or Faculty Dean. These are the Awards Of- ficers for this school year: PROFESSOR SUBJECT Ledwell Sharkey Milne English Psychology Political Studies Spira History Modern Languages Berardinelli Reesor Music Ali Economics Holmes Philosophy Baker Canadian Studies Wolf Sociology / Anthropology Buck Classics MacLellan Religious Studies Go to the October 28 meet- ing of the Scholarship Promo- tion Committee in Main 135 at 2:30pm and ask questions, and then make it happen for yourself. Remember that the Search For The Green begins with you! Graduate Scholarships They give it away by the bun- dle: $5,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000...And you can use it to study in the world’s most presti- gious universities. I am talking about money available for UPEI students will- ing to go into graduate studies. Every year twenty-nine for- eign governments offer scholar- ships to study in their countries. In addition, for those who pre- fer to remain in Canada, almost every Canadian university offers scholarships (and assistantships). A great number of foundations do the same. How many UPEI students ap- ply? -A very small percentage. But, of those who do, a fair number win. The exact number of UPEI students who have won graduate scholarships are assis- tantships is not known, because some winners pocket the bundle, depart for their new university, without informing UPEI. But we know that during the academic year of 1986-87, there were at least 10 winners. And at least seventeen in 1987-88. These fig- ures refer to Arts majors alone. The figures for winners in Sci- ence, in Professional Studies and in Business Administration are unknown to this writer at this time. During the 1986-87 academic year, one student won $18,000; another won $11,000; a third $8,500. During the 1987-88 aca- demic year, one student won $19,500; another $16,000; a third $10,000; a fourth $8,600; a fifth $8,500. By the way, if you are tempted to spend a year in Lon- don, Edimburgh, Melbourne, Vi- enna, Moscow, Paris, Mexico City, New Delhi... - any city in the twenty-nine countries anx- ious to have Canadian students — at the expense of the host country —, there is still time. If you wish to go after graduation, and you are now a Senior, you still have a few days left to apply. If youarea Junior, you have one year to pre- pare your application. The dead- line for those foreign countries is October 31, every year. Most other scholarships h=ve deadlines later in the year. For more specific information — and for advice — see your Awards Officer. Dean Smitheram has created 13 Award Officers (one in every Arts department) and a special committee. They have one specific mission: to assist you in winning a grad. uate scholarship. So, if you haven’t applied, “what’s holding you back?” Senior students are welcome to a meeting, dealing with grad- uate scholarships and graduate schools, Friday 28 October, at 2:30 pm, room 135 Main Build- ing. Francis F. Falvo Chairman Scholarship Promotion Com- mittee PS. Applying for a graduate scholarship does not mean that you commit yourself to go to graduate school. After you have won it, you can always refuse it. But if you do decide to accept it, do send us a postcard to let us know. Canada Employment Centre Canada Em- ployment Centre on The Search for the Green There is a display in the Pit that list undergraduate scholar- ships and bursaries with dead- lines in the next month. Go to the Self—Serve File System in the Resourse Section of the Depart- ment of Student Services for ap- plications or further information on any that interest you. Students interested in gradu- ate schools should also come in to the Student Services Depart- ment. There is information on fi- nancial aid, entrance tests, and calendars of various schools...all at your fingertips. Also, if you are in the Faculty of Arts, then communicate your interest to the Awards Officer of your discipline. If you are in the Faculty of Busi- ness, Education, Science or Vet- erinary Medicine, then I recom- mend you setting up an appoint- ment with the Chair of your dis- cipline, or the Deans themselves.
