iat Grave Girls Baffle a Burglar. | HIS FINGERS AS HE A WINDOW CHOPS OF} two OF TRIES TO ENTER (NE Two girls frustrated a burglary a few nights ago atthe house of Colonel Daniel Franklin, a retired merchant of Glen Falls, Conn., a thriving factory village four miles north of Plainfield. Cul. Franklin was away. The only persons at home were Mrs. Franklin who is an invalid, and her daugh ters, Emma and Matilda They were startled some time after midnight by the noise of somebody breaking in at the rear of the house. Emma took a revolver from the bureau, Matilda got an exe, and together they stole downstairs just in time | to tind a big ruffsin climbing into a window. | The burglar had one hand on the sill. | Matilda raised the axe and quickly brought | it down on the hand, while Emma fired two shots. With a cry of pain the burglar} dropped out of sight. A light was struck | in afew moments, and underneath the | window were found two fingers which had been cut off near the hand. The pistol | shots aroused the neighborhood and search was made for the burglar, but no trace of | him was found. — >: - Our Girls as Successful Women A wealthy woman recent'y gave $200,000 to | establish a summer resort for poor mothers nd their children. God bless her, this is| only one instance among thousands where woman has conceived and executed grand ileas. Women are rapidly entering every brauch of the useful arts, and aspiring to every money making employment. “What shall we do with our girls is no longer a mighty problem fur mothers and fathers to solve. Some one has said ‘‘It takes a woman to set a hen,” and so it does. ‘Lhe most successful poultry raisers are women. We have io mind @ woman who has for years raised finer poul- try and got more eggs from her hens at less expense, than - male neigh »ors,—practical men, too. Let your girls: ng ge in the poul try industry, as canes are do.ug. Give them a fair share of the profits, and they wil! soon convince their fathers that girls are mighty handy persons to have about the old house. With the aid now offered any person can make hens lay even in cold weather. Out of twenty-four gold coin premiums offered last winter for best results, one-third were won by the women who used Sheridan's Condition owder to make hens lay. For ex- ample Mrs Heury Baker, Holliston, Mass, won $10 and got from 18 bens during the three nonths’ trial 1359 eggs; Mrs LJ W ilsun, Northboro, Masu, got 32743 eggs from 10% hens; Mrs Edwin Brown, East Greenwich, Rl, from 35 hens got 2454 eggs; Mrs E Bartley, Freeport, Pa, got 2029 eggs from 32 hens; Miss Ada L Ross, of Mt Sterling, Lil, from 15 hens ,ot 886 eggs; and Miss Mueggie Crous horn, of Ovtobine, Va, got 2000 eggs from 30 hens; each of the last five ladies also won a $5.00 premium from I 38 Johnson & Co, 22 Custom House St, Boston, Mass. Every per sen who sends this firm now $1 20 for a can of Powder, and desires it, can have his name entered as a competitor, if the premiums are again offered. For 50 cents they will send two 25 cent packs of Powder; for 31.00 five pscks postpaid; six cans for $5.00, express paid; a large can of Powder, also one year's subscription to Farm-Poultry, monthly, botl sent postpaid for $150.
