SIIITLTLT {‘l:'£‘t"tit0fw$ifllT»00!§l. wiiih an assur- saliooo a year. e utreased to Because it changed Liberal deficits into (,o1iservative surpluses. Because it is the first Government Tn T~W€llly-i`0ur years that succeeded iii TUETUHS revenue and expenditure meet and was able to show a surplus. Because instead of sinking the pm. VTHCE $45,000 a year deeper in debt, as the Liberals had been doing for twenl-Y Years, it reduced the debt by “Tl OVETESE Of $30,000 a year siiicc coming into power, Because in the last three yours it paid $89,000 of the legacy ot’ $1,027,000 debt which the Liberals left bchinti them, together with an empty Ti-ea. sury. Because it reduced the interest on The ilffbl- by $3,250 since coming to power. | Because in ordcr to reduce the debt and gradually pay oft the $000,000 Mortgage fastened on the Province by the Liberals it is highly important that our claims should be pressed to a satisfactory settlement at Ottawa. Because through the neglect and incapacity ot' successive Liberal Gov- crnmcuts to prcss our claims nt Ottawa during the fifteen years tho two Governments were in line and their culpable buugliug of the subsidy claim in 1907, they iii conjunction with Sir Wilfred Laurier blocked thc way and barred the doors against Liberal Delegations and left no hopes for any settlement of our claims un- der Provincial or Federal Liberal Gov- ernments. Because Sir Robert Borden opened the doors of Parliament to iho Math- leson Delegation and listened in a friendly and sympathetic spirit io their able presentation of the lsland’s claims and granted an increase of Subsidy of $100,000 per year as a pay- ment on account and in earnest that nil claims of thc Island would meet with 'a fair, full and satisfactory set- tlemeut. Because through the efforts of our Dominion Representatives and the co- operation of the Mathieson Govern- ment they have obtained a magnifi- cent Car Ferry Service, the greatest boon that has ever come to the Prov- ince whereby continuous communi- cation bctween tlte Island and the mainland is assured. The three short hauls and excessive freight rates, which were such a. serious handicap to shippers, business men and farmers, abolished and which will tend to cheapeii goods and greatly increase prices oi' farm products. Because the construction of the Car Ferry \Vorks and the standardizing of our railway is estimated to cost $10,000,000. the greater part of which will he distributed in wages and thc purclinse of various supplies, so ibut laliourers, meclianlcs, tratiesiiieii, luis- iuess men and all classes oi’ our people will be reached and benefited. Because last year it expended $111,000 more on education than the Liberals did in 1911. Because it has rc-enacted the law granting supplements to teachers. which was abolished by the Liberals. Because since coming into power lt has given teachers the following in- crease of salariesz- lst class male teachers $82 lst class female teachers 124 2nd class male teachers 77 2nd class female teachers 79 3rd class male teachers 59 Zird class female teachers G0 Because it established the Summer School for teachers and pays the ex- penses of teachers attending the course. Because it has appointed five nddi- tional school iiispectors, so that every school in the province may be visited at leat-it four times in the year, thus interesting parents more in education, ance ainl encouragement in their work,l obtaining better results and raising the standard of their schools through- out the province. Bcciiiiso they established ri School Supply Dopot. where parents and pupils may obtain all school books and school requirements at cost, thus sav- ing parents many dollars yearly in the purchase of school supplies. Because it has been. and will con- liiiuo to be. the policy of the Govern- ment to give teachers all the material assistance possible to still further im- prove their conditions, snd to raise the schools of the province to the high- est possible standard of efficiency. Because the Liberal manifesto docs not promise to do anything for teach- ers, and if the Liberals are returned they may again sweep-away the sup- plements and bonuses, as they did when ln power. Because they have established a road system under which the people's taxes are expended on the roads in the district in which they are collected, instead of being sent to the Depart- ment of Public Works, to be distri- buted and expended on favourite roads and favourite workers as was the case under Liberal rule. Because all tax payers, whether Conservative or Liberal. are given an equal opportunity to pay their taxes by road work. Because this system of road-m king gives fair play to all and has produced the best roads ever known in the pro- vince and put an end to the squander- ing of the farmers'_ taxes on the high- ways. Because of unfair and undeserved fault finding of the road masters by the Patriot and Liberal candidates it would seem that if the Liberals be elected they intend to repeal the prosrnt Road Act and go back to the old system of fnvouritlsm and jobbsry nn the roads wlitcli kept them in power for so many YES"- Becauss it spent 851.000 s year on steel bridges and permanent works, i_...._ __.-___.._. _ . ,.._.._..___._¢_._4 giving teachers and pupils more assist-T OF VITAL IMPORTANCE TO EVERY ELECTOR OF P. E.l while the Liberals spent only $11,000 a year. Because it spent on permanent works $40,000 a year more than the Liberals did. Because in tlirco ‘ years it spent $153,000 on steel bridges and perma- iicut works and paid every dollar out of curret revenue, while the Liberals in their twenty years only spent $218,000 on permanent works, and had to borrow the money to pay it and charged it to capital account. Note the difference. Because they built a splendid Agri- cultural Hall at Charlottetown and one at Summersidc. liccniise they csiahlishcd a Long and Short Course i'or thc bcucfit of farmers and furmcrs’ sons. Because they have materially in- creased the grant to Seed Fairs, Far- mers’ Institutes, Womens Institutes, established a course lu Domestic Sci- ence and given all the assistance and encouragement in their power to these worthy Institutloiis. Because for the benefit of the farm- crs they have built and put in opera- tion at St Petcr's Bay, 11. self-loading, ami t~icii‘-disc-liargiug mussel mud scow, capable of carrying eight car loads and delivering one train loud ii day. The Sl I‘ct0r'B llay mud is zicknow- lcdgcil by all fairuicrsiio be the best quality of mud on the Island, the supply is practically iucxliaustiblc and it is sold at cost to the farmers, so that farmers in every part of the pro- vince cnii liuvc it dclivcrcil at cost nt their nenrcst station. liecaii.-ie tho policy of the Govern- ment is to build and operate similar mud scows in other bays whore this valuable fertiliser can be procured. Because they havo increased the litraiits to the Deaf and Dumb Institu- tion and School for the Blind. Because they have increased thc grants to thc Childrcn's Aid Society and the Anti Tuberculosis Society. Because they have given a grant of $500 to each of the Cityllospitals and zi. grant of $400 to Prince County Hos- pital and $100 each to thc two Orphan- ages. Because through the munificent gift of a prominent member of the Government and the -‘co-operation of the Government a splendid up to dats Sanitorium has been built and equip- ped where those afflicted with tuber- culosis may be cared for and treated and that dreaded disease be checked from spreading all over the Province. Because they have obtsiiieda. new cable between Cape Traverse and Tormentine and a similar one between Wood Islands and the mainland thus insuring uninterrupted cable service the- year around. Because they have secured cheaper telegraph rates, a message which for- merly cost $1.50 now costing only 30 cunts. Because they have granted $15,000 to the Patriotic Fund to provide for iho wives and families of the brave men who are now fighting in defence ot' liomc and country mid have other wise given every encouragement and support to the brave men and boys who have offered their lives in de- fence of the Empire. Because with a total expenditure of $521,000 last year the Hon. Mr. Richards, Leader of the Opposiiloii, when challenged by Premier Math- iesoii to point out one single item in thai: large expenditure which he con- HE DID.
