These Lubes land in 1888 and it is proof of the excellent TEMPERANCE ALLIANCE Delegation and Mr. Peters. Sm:-I was greatly surprised to read in The Examiner last Friday an article of a very mlsleadinrr nature entitled “En- forcement of Our Laws," inspired evident- ly by some member of the Committee ap- pointed by the Alliance to walt on Mr. Blanchard and Mr. Peters, whose zeal for the Conservative party is greater than his discretion. As an independent Conserva» tive I think it but fair to Mr. Peters and Mr. Blanchard to ,deny some of the im- plied assertions lu the above mentioned article. In the first place the committee only interviewed Mr. Blanchard and the reason that he gave for wltholdlng the papers from Mr. Bears was that the Tem- perance Alliance ,of King's County were considering' the question of having a new prosecutor appointed with greater zeal in tho work than Mr. Bears has shown for the last few months. and therefor ln Mr. Peters' opinion until the question of the appointment ofa new prosecutor was settled it would not he wise to furnish papers to Mr. Bears. And' on being asked why so few third offences were being tried, he said he was never asked for papers for a sec md or third offence, but what he furnished them ani that he hadalways been willing to do his duty in helping Mr. Bears ob- tain convictions. That is the substance of Mr. Bianchnrrfs answers to our questions. Wc then went to see Mr. Peters but could rot find him owing to his wlfa's illness. Now until Mr. Peters had been intrrviciimil and given a chance to explain matters lt was ,I think to say the least, very linpolltic for any member of that Uoniniittee without the consent of the other incnibcrs to inspire nn article of censure on Mr. Peters in a party organ, especially an article misleading in its nature. in my opinion the worst obstacle in our task of annihilatlng the drink triiliic is the readl- ness with which even the best of the tamperance people sacrifice our temper- ance principles for the welfare of our pollticalpurtv. Nowi do not wish this letter to be taken as an attempt to ex- onerate Mr. Peters for his non-enforce ment of the law. l write it simply as a protest nrrainst judging him without a hearing and for party purposes. ‘ Giro.
