The U.S. plan came into opera- jon earlier this year and has al- ,-gady resulted in 10,700,000 acres if land being taken out of cultiva- ilon, of which 5.000.000 acres was and that had been sown to wheat. writing of the .S. program In the current issue of the trade de- partment's fortnightly pinllcation "Foreign Trade." W. C. Hopper. agricultural counsellor at the Ca- nadian Embassy in Washington, says: --The hope is that, when the acreage reserve program is in full operation in 1957 and subsequent , , , , 5, 15,000,000 to 20.000 000 acres of the eligible crops will be taken out of production. "Of this total. l0.000.000 tov12.- o00,000 acres probably will repre- sent land which formerly pro- duced wheat. The present 55.000,- 000 acres of wheat harvested in the U.S. would, therefore. here- duced to 45,000,000 or 4.'l,000,000 acres." i The soil bank plan has two parts. he explains-the acreage reserve program and the conserv- ation reserve program. PRODUCERS AIDE!) The acreage reserve programs provides 3750.000 a year for pay. merit to producers who cut their acreage of wheat, corn, cotton, rice. peanuts and various types of tobacco to certain limits during this and the next three Crnp years. These acres must then be left idle or a cover crop put on llicm. The farmer must practise erosion or weed control on the idle acres. The conservation reserve plan, to be started this year, provides for 34.50.000.000 a year to be paid farmers for long-term conserva- tion work on their farms. This, over the years, is expected to en- courage the shift of 20,000,000 to 25,000,000 acres of farmland intoi grass, trees or water storage. Chief purpose of the US. soil bank plan, says Mr. Hopper, is to protect and increase American farm income. If it cuts down the flow of Amer- ican wheat into alreadY-CT0Wd9d world markets, the US. soil bank plan will also benefit Canadian - ' Section 5 Female born in mass Sheep Class Judging Results At The Provincial Exhibition SHIIOPSHIRES Sectlonl, Male Born in 1056 - 1. s.c.
