One More Sad Mystery. ACTION OF A TALENTED | broad, the rest of the iace tapering to THE STRANGE AND HIGHLY CONNECTED YOUNG LADY——SEARCHING IN VAIN FOR THE | feather of same color: light grey, close- | fitting jacket, crocauctted edge, black ‘dress; a gold watch-chain, twisted like M ISSING ONE, After three weeks’ search, the St. Louis police confess themeelves baffled about the disappearance of Miss Mary Jones. The young lady is well known) in St. Leuis, and is highly connected, | ball having relatives in various parts of the| heavy plain gold ring, and a ring with [parnet setin pearls worn before it. State. Sheis a cousin of the wife of Judge Sherwood, of Bluff seme time ago. Her home since childhood has been iv Mr. Wear’s family, except during the time she passed away pursuing her studies. After graduating at Drury College, Springtield, where she was THE VALEDICTORIAN of the class, the young lady, having developed musical talent ef a high ordar, came to St. Louis, and was uader the Supreme} Bench, and a niece of ex-Senator Wear, | cloth who removed from De Soto to Poplar | the instruction of the Epstein brothers for quite a period. While she was living with her unele’s tamily in Ark-| ansas she had a class in music, at the| same time ardently pursuing her str ties, especially the classics. So te her books that she began to give evidences of mental aberratioa. She had illusions about diseases with which she imagined she was afflicted, and on One occasion she was so impressed that her uncle brought her to St. Louis, and Dr. Hodgen, humoring herin the deception, pre- scribed a simple medicine. Several months ago her eye began te trouble her,and shecame te St. Louis and obtained treatment from Dr. Dickin- son. devoted was she A GOOD-BYE LETTER. Last month she again complained of her eyes, and another trip to St. Louis was planned, but temporarily given up. Os the 23rd of April, while Mr. and Mrs. Wear were away from home, tke young lady left, after making pains— taking preparations for the departure. She wrote and had mailed three letters. One of these was to a triend, and read as follows: — “1 leave to-night. I cannot wait for your opinion. I hope your prayers will fallow my wandering feet. I will not have time to find Mrs. M If you see - her tell her I long to see heronce again. Iwish Icould lay my head onthe shoulder of seme of these blessed friends I am leaving behind, if but fer one moment. Pray for me; 1 know your petitions will be heard. Good-bye, good-bye. ” There was no signature ; but asimple dash of the pen. In another of the letters she told a friend how tired she was of Poplar Bluft, and how she lenged to get away: The destination of the third letter has not been learned. THE DEPARTURE PILANNED. She selected her clothing with care, laying aside her party dresses, and some trinkets. Witha well filled trunk she left Poplar Bluff on the night train, No difficulty was feund in traeing her movements for 24 hours. She reached the Union Depot on the morning of the 24th of April, and leaving her trunk, went to Hotel Barnum, where the family usually stopped when in the city, and took aroom. Afier making her toilet she went Out into the city and visited a friend, Mrs. Mitehell. While there she seemed excitable, and laughed and cried in turns. In the afternoon she went away, saying she hadto take the train at 8.30, The train for Poplar Bluff leaves at nine. A little after 7 o'clock she appeared at the hotel, paid her bill and went away, NO CLUES. There the trail breaks off abruptly. It has been learned that she checked out her trunk at the depot, but nebody there can remember whether it was It is certain she did not take an Tron | Mountain train, for she was well known | to the conductors, having travelled to and fro a good deal. Her friends can theorise but little. Two years ago she became converted to the Catholie faith, | and has been very devout. It was| theught that she might have entered a} convent. Her action in leaving behind | bright elothing and jewellery seemed to! favor this. Bishop Ryan gave the! friends a letter and they made the! round of the St. Louis iestitutions, but | ouly to find that she had not gone to} any of them. Relatives have been written te but| none of them have heard of the missing | lady. Judge Sherwood and his wite| are in the city, and also Mr. Wear. As/| a last resort they have had severalhun- | dred photographs and descriptive cir- culars printed, and these will be sent in every direction. The personal appearance is set forth | as follows : ‘‘ Twenty-six years of age, | mediomly-dark hair, sallow. or pallid | complexion, eyes grey, very clear, with | swollen appearance of underf lid, nose | thin and delicate, small mouth, except when laughing, then it spreads over the teeth ; the eye-teeth a little projecting at the gums; the front teeth are filled with gold from the inside, the’ filling showing through between them ; equare | flat chin, with red pimples on it, small bony neck, slender figure, shoulders a| little stooped, weight | 106 pounds ; | high, broad forehead, with blue veins | Very plain under the skin at the temples; | at one temple, near eyebrow, a small | mole, with White fibrous hair growing out of it, about the size of a large pin ; ow | seventy cents. | done at Browy’s. THE DAILY MXAMINER, JUNE hands thin, blue veias very apparent, tinver, joints large. ‘The forehead is the chin; thin, flat cheeks. Had on when she left a garnet straw hat, with | a cord, worn round neck to gold wateb; | breast-pio, gold bar with shell in centre | with a pearl setin it; ear-rings, gold | pendants ; on left fore finger a| She is 5 feet 4 inches high: had garnet hand-—bag ; russet leather trunk, wooden strips 1uanivg lengthwise.” About ten days ago a despatch to the Globe-Demoerat irom Cape Girar- deau reported the finding of the body of a woman dressed in black IN THE RIVER, The descripition was very meagre. Mr. Wear will investigate this tg;day or te-morrow, for the theory — suicide while temporarily Ceranged through ill- health is about the only one which the relatives can now entertain, And yet the fact of taking clothing in’ such quantities seems to be at variance with this, Therelations of the young lady, with her friends were most tender, and there is no mistaking the sincerity of the grief they manifest over the cruel mystery. Their faith inher purity is unshaken, and they say that,if living, she has simply been promoted togo away without letting her friends know where sho is by the same irresponsibility of mental condition, which must account for self-destruction if sheis dead. There is still aslight, lingering hope that she will be found to have immured herself from the world in some institu- tion. fhe Great French Kemedy, LeDue’s Periodical Pills. Wilds, well-known city missionary in New York, and brother of the late eminent Judge Wilds, of the Massachuseita Supreme Court, writes as follows: “73 E. 54th St., New York, May 16, 1882. Messns, J.C, Aver & Co., Gentlemen ; Last winter I was troubled with a most uncomfortable itching humor affecting more especially my limbs, which itched so jntolerably at night, and burned. so intense- ly, that L could searcely bear any clothing over them. 1 was also a sufferer from a severe catarrh and eatarrhal cough; my appetite was poor, and my system a good deal run down, Knowing the value of AY®R’S SARSAPARILLA, by observation of many other cases, and from personal use in former years, | began taking it for the above-named disorders. My appetite im- proved almost from the first dose, After a short time the fever and itching were allayed, and all signs of irritation of the skin disappeared. My catarrh and cough were also cured by the same means, and my general health greatly improved, until it is now excellent. L feel a hundred per cent stronger, and I attribute these results to the use of the SARSAPARILLA, which I recommend with all confidence as the best blood medicine ever devised. I took it in small doses three times a day, and used, in all, less than two bottles. I place these facts at your service, hoping their publication may do good, Yours respectfully, Z. P. WILDs.” The above instance is but one of the many constantly coming to our notice, which prove the perfect adaptability of AYER’s SARSA- PARILLA to the eure of all diseases arising from impure or impoverished blood, and a weakened vitality. Ayer’s Sarsaparilla cleanses, enriches, and strengthens the blood, siimulates the action of the stomach and bowels, and thereby enables the system to resist and overcome the attacks of all Scrofu- lous Diseases, Eruptions of the Skin, Rheu- matism, Catarrh, General Debility, and all disorders resulting from poor or corrupted blood and a low state of the system, PREPARED BY Dr.J.C.
