Boutonniere Daylfly has myriads of small (21.5) inch flowers with widely overlapping segments. The sepals are clear yellow and the petals are light rosy peach; this lily also blooms in August. Vulcan is a light velvety maroon with faint golden-brown midlines and orange throat overlaid. It is a Dayllly of startling color and distinctively different. These are plants that will be something to look forward to in the coming summer. The Daylily was intro- duced into Britain in 1598. and the fact that its flowers can be recog- nized in many of the old floral pictures and embrolderies proves its long and deserved popularity with all gardeners. I-Iemerocsllls (K. Hemera-day: kallos-beauty) is the botannlcal name and they are one of the hardiest plants for our gardens. I remember seeing clumps of this lily in tall grass in an old neglect- ed garden where it had been planted years and years before by someone who loved flowers. A Geum was added to the gar- den collection. suitable for the rock garden and they belong among the best. nest in habit with excellent foliage when not in bloom. Such virtues along with their charming flowers all help to make them popular. New plans are very interesting and often it is possible to find just the flower needed for a special spot. This fall I have noticed many flowers in other gardens planted in a sheltered place and still beautiful after quite severe frost. Lovely African Marlizolds planted in the shelter of a white picket fence. and tall bright scar- let Salvla planted in the shelter of the dwelling which looked very well against the white wall. If we take care in our planting for mu beauty it is possible to have several weeks added to the garden satisfaction. Some !hTUb5 are still in green flcssy foliage and bronze and scarlet berries and with the evergreens make the gar- den a nice place to dig in these autumn days. p . An old, old rhyme about the weather runs thus: i'Evenlng red and morning gray will set the traveler on his way: But evening gray and morning red will bring down rain upon his head." We now know that such weath- er signs are far from liifalllble. Yet according to meteorologists they have a slight scientific has- is. A pale sing in the evening means that the atmosphere con- tains very littlelmolsture and that rain is not likely to fall within the next twenty-four hours at least. On the other hand, a gray even- ing indicates the presence of moisture laden dust particles in the air, giving rise to the last couplet of the above verse. . . . They maintain synagogues in New York City and elsewhere. Crossing over to Latin America you'll find about 250.030 Negro Jews, while Africa boasts over 100 million. Like other Jews they were divided into two groups. orthodox and unorthodox. The first colored Jews were found in Ethiopia by James Bruce. the Scottish explorer. in 1790. Their origin cannot be def- lnitely traced and some writers think they may be descendants from the Lost Tribes of Israel. When first contacted by Bruce they knew nothing of the Hebrew language. They had their own kings. however, who claimed they were descended from King David.
