HASZARD’S GAZETTE. Saturday. March ~—‘‘— The English Mail did not ttrrive until 'l‘liursday ‘tight. Tito news will be found on the first uud sccond pages of our paper. We went by invitation the day before yesterday to see the Steam Mill just erected by the Mr. J. Scantlebury. commence operations. There were four men employed. one at an uprigltt saw cutting out a fclloc for a wheel. another at a lathe turning and polishing an iron axletree. a tltird. at another lathe turning a bed-post. and the fourth at a bench. ripping plank. by means of a circular saw. A vs. cant drum was pointed out to us as intended for a strap to drive an immense grind-tons Wlllfh was standing in it corner. It was a cliecring and ngrea- able sight to see so much work performed with no little bustle. Turning lathes and circular saws are nothing uncommon. but an upright saw cutting with the most perfect case a two inch linrd wood plank in the segment of a circle. is to us at least a novelty. but we fully appreciate the advantages gained by this arrangement. These are called labor saving ntachinss. and so they unquestionably are. but they are at the snare Iitns labour creating machines. for the demand on the part of Mr. Sc.-tntlebur_v for supplies of the raw material will be augmented in n tenfold ratio. and in a very short time they will be enabled to supply better and more perfectly finished articles in their line. at a cheaper rate to the public. and at a mere rt-muaerating profit to themselves. than under the old hand labour system. These are the sort of improve- ments that we wish to sea fostered and encouraged, not by beuntics or exclusive privileges but simply by removing the existing impediments. in the shape of impost and nice duties. and rendering them exempt from such burtlieus in future. Many will say that this is in effect granting a bounty and to a certain degree this is true, lot it is an encouragement to erect and perfect similar establishments to the one just described. but there is this essential ditI'ersnce—A bounty is taken from the pocket of every tax payer in the Island who contributes in proportion to the sum he ysto " , ' " ' “ simply example the party claiming the benefit of it. from putting his hand in his own pocket and making an addition to an outlay for which he may or tnsy not be adequately remunerated. It is one thing to ask a neighbour to put his shoulder to the wheel. or his horse in the shafts, for the purpose of assisting you with his labour to overcome the obstacles in the road. and another and quite different affair. in request- ing him nct to place such impediments in your way. but to leave the course open to your own unfettered exertions. Nothing could exceed the ease and regu- _lurity with which the machine performed its work. The whole reflects great credit on Mr. Scantlsbury and the Engineer. The Presb tery of Prince Edward Island met at Osveudis on the 8th inst.. when a call was resented to Mr. James McGregor McKay by t e congregation of’ Cascum c and West. Point.
