Au Anecdote by Mark Twain. ’ Mark Twain writes for the Centdry a tribute to his fellow townsman, the late James Hammond Trumbull Mr. Clemens relates the following anecdote: Years ago, as | have been told, a wid- owed descendant of the Audubon family in desperate need sold a perfect copy of Audubon’s “Birds” to a commercially minded scholar in Amcrica for $100. Vhe book was worth $1,000 in the market. The scholar complimented himself upon his shrewd stroke of business. ‘Uhat was not Hammond Trumbull’s style. the war a lady in the far scuth wrote him that among the wreckage of her better days she had a book which some had told ber was worth $100 and had advised her to offer it to him. She added that she was very poor, and that if he would buy it at that price it Would be a great favor to her. lt was Eliot’s Indian Bible. Trumbull answered that if it was a perfect copy it had an established market value, like a gold coin, and was worth $1,000; that if she would send it to him he would exam- ine it, and if it proved to be perfect he would sell it to the British museum and forward the money to her. It did prove to be perfect, and she got her $1,000 with- out delay and intact. An Author's First Strike, It is told of Justin McCarthy that in his early days he once submitted a story toa magazine called The Galaxy. One day he said to the editor, *'l have come to see if you will take that story 1 offered Whe Galaxy.” * Yes,” cordially responded the editor, “‘and 60 more like it.”’ dime passed, and one day Mr. McCarthy waiked into ‘The Gaiaxy office with an im- posing pile of manuscript under his arm. ‘**What is that?’ asked Mr. Sheldon. Mr. McCarthy laid the bundle of manu- script upon the publisher’s desk and re- plied, ‘* Here are the 6U stories you ordered on the occasion of my last visit. ’’ He got a check covering the whole 60.— London ‘Telegraph. The Names of a Few Books Which Fave Not Been Copyrighted. The journalist who had just written a j delightful little brochure, entitled ‘ “The Liberty of the Press; or; How to Knock the | Props From Under the Ar Sarat Le- ver That Moves the World,’’ was calling on Mr. Young at the library to get it copy- righted. Mr. Young gracefully referred him to a clerk in that department, and as the clerk was getting the paper ready he was making himself interesting by talk- ing. ‘Yes, sir,’’ he was saying, ‘‘I rather think you have hit upon a good title for your book, Of course some people won't know what the dickens—I1 beg your par- don—whet on earth it means, but that doesn’t make any difference to you. They are stupid people who wouldn't buy it any- how. Still there’s a good deal in a title. Of course I don’t mean the kind our rich girls love to marry,’’ and the clerk chuc- kled, ‘‘but titles of books. You under stand. I just made a list Icame across today. They are from different sources. Here's a few that funny fellow Tom Hood gave to the Duke of Devonshire to go on dummy books for an entrance door to his library: ‘McAdam’s Views In Rhodes,’ ‘Boyle on Steam Designs For Fome Friezes,’ by an Arctic Explorer; ‘Pygma- lion,’ by Lord Bacon; ‘Cursory Remarks on Swearing,’ by Jupiter; Percy Vere,’ in 40 volumes; ‘Cook’s Specimens of the ‘On Sore Throat and Migration of the Swallow, ’ ‘Kosciusko Sandwich Tongue,’ +} Uiit on the Right of Poles to Stick Up For Themselves,’ ‘Lamb’s Recollections of Suett,’ ‘Chronological Account of the Date Pahn,’ and several others. ‘Then there were some old volumes of the time of Cromwell which bad titles like these: ‘Crumbs of Comfort For the Chick- ens of the Covenant,’ ‘High Heeled Shoes For Dwarfs In Holiness,’ ‘Hooks and Eyes For Believers’ Breeches,’ ‘The Spiritual Mustard Pot to Make the Soul Sneeze With Devotion,’ ‘Tobacco Battered and the Pipes Shattered About Their Ears That Idly Idolize So Loathsome a Vanity, by a Volley of Holy Shot Thundered From Mount Helicon, a Poem Against the Use of Tobacco,’ by Joshua Sylvester; ‘The Snuffers of Divine Love,’ ‘Seven Sobs of a Sorrowful Soul For Sin,’ and some more of the same sort. Added to these are a few scattering ones like these: ‘Waves of Sound and the High C,’‘A Jawey Forever,’ by an Active Prizefighter; ‘A Rich Ameri- can, or the Earl’s Choice,’ and so on through a list of odd ones.’’ The clerk handed the journalist a folded paper, ‘*Thank you,” said the journalist. “Fifty cents, please.
