We had to announce, but briefly, yeeter~ day, in but part of the Jast edit'on of THe EXAMINER, the deeply lamented death of Mr. Cyrus Shaw. He was born at New Perth in Januarv, 1850, ihe son of the Jate Robert Shaw, Esquire. His early years were spent upon his father’s farm and at the reighbcring school. Afterwards he attended Prince of Wales Collkge. Then he returned to the farm, and entered upon bis life’s work. He was an edvanced and success- ful farmer. Wwe doubt if there was one person identified with the interests and good name of Prince Edvard Island, who taw the cattle from the Government Stock Farm -on the show ground, on Wednesday, the 126 b instant, but felt emotions of shame, } diegust acd contempt for group. The Ayrshires displayed no udders, the Shorthoras Jacked every characteristic neccesary to the animal ex- pected to give a profi’, either for milk or beef; wnd their those the motely calves wir’, compared of gocd breedes, * ha'f |starved-looking creatures.” Farmers who bave been'generous buvere at tue Govern with ment cattle sales the last few’years were, on the previous day, greatly «disap- poluted at the absence of the Government: caitle from the Ayrshire and Short-horn prize competitions, As it wasa Mari- Provinc’al Exhibition they very propeily concluded that the cattle from the Government Stock Farm would teke a leading par.in promoting our provincial fame as a siock-breeding centre,as was time done by the Sullivan -Ferguson govera~ meni years ago at Halitaa, St. John and Montreal, But when these farmers saw the scare-crows and dry bones that filed into the auction yard the foliowing day, their disappointment changed to disgust, aod their respect for our private breeders of registered Ayrshire and Shorthorn cattle, whointhe face of the competition of the Goyernnent Farm were ready and able to meet on equal terms the splendid ‘exhivits {from Nova sco'ia and New Brunswick, was increased. If local breeders of those did not come off best every time we may blame the Government. In every other class of fine-bred cattle, sheep and horses. our Island breeders cam? out in the prize ring with flying colors, Thie is the reward our provinc? gets for its out- lay on that expensive farm. If we add to the first cost of land and live stock the accumulated interes; and rent, neither of which have been paid, together with the debt on working ex- penees which ac cumulates year after year, it will be found that the Goveroment Farm owes the province over fifty thou- sand dollare. Avd when the stock is allowed to run down, as it evidently is under the present administration, there is nothing but disgrace to show for the money.
