Always an ardent lover o! natural 40% oi the live stock produced in Canada is sold co-operatlvely while 60 percent is sold in competition. How can we expect banner prices ior our hogs in the Marltimcs when Western hogs are sold as low as 1% cents to 2 cents per lb. The position oi our manager and salesmen placed between the nether rnillstones oi’ club criticism ' , and an avalanche oi falling prices PRESIDENT'S REPORT Living Christ." Captain T. F. Kellyl We have come to the period oi our eighth annual meeting oi "The Uigg and Grandview Shipping Club." At no period in the history oi our club have we experienced such low and minous prices ior hogs and lambs. Our last iinanclal returns showed hogs prices 8.60 per cwt. and our lambs figuring as low as $4.75 per cwt. These low prices are in general keeping with low prices oi agricul- tural products throughout the world and not due to lneiiicient salesmanship. Our troubles arc not due to overproduction but under- consumption and politically to high tariiis that are blocking the chan- nels oi trade, creatlng adverse con- ditions to ireer exchange oi goods. Our shipping club has euiiered as a general consequence. During the year that has gone by we have been laced with a continual slumping o! prices and we now hope and trust they have reached rock bottom. In view oi such low prices some members have become discouraged and claim that co-operatiw is not what it is cracked up to be. It may however be claimed it is the lack oi oo-operation we suiier from, when we are lniormed that only is not an enviable one. With prices stalling in January at 8% and a shortage in hogs we were looking forward to a more prosperous year. We co-operated in 18 shipments oi hogs and lambs. In completing car load lot there was a grave uncertainty as to the number obtainable at each ship- -ment, anywhere from 20 to 50. Shippers are taking it ior grant- ed that they have no responsibility in listing up. This is certainly a bad state oi affairs and will lead to trouble at some future date ii not the winding up oi our ship- ping club. Happily in conjunction with the Mlllview Live Stock Shipping Club it was possible to make our ship- ments large enough to save on ireight and other expenses. We have endeavored to arrange our shipment to take care oi hogs when they are finished which ls generally about three weeks. We fl-YO lorry to state that some members see it advantageous to ship by truck or slaughter. Such members deiaultlng cannot possib- ly clalmtheir remittance from con- tigency iund. We also co-opernted with the Millview Club in adver- tising our ‘ilpments. This was necessary irnm the tact that our contingency iiind was reduced to hali its amount oi former years, thereby compelling us to curtail ex- penses as much as possible. Alter the eight years oi service that has been given by our club some members are still continuing to use it as a convenience. The contract they have signed calls ior the sale o! all their hogs and lambs through the club excepting those used for home or local consum, ' n. It ls dliilcult to conceive why any iarmer should sell stock to outside buyers when only club prices are oiiered. Can't the value oi protec- tion be understood? The prices the Egg and Poultry Association pays for eggs and dressed poultry is standard. The prices the Potato Growers have been paying ior potatoes was standard price. The prices our clubs pay ior live stock has become standard. Do we always have to keep hammering the iacts home? When our organization started to do business several years ago prices received were irom 3 to 4 cents below Montreal. By the various changes in curtailing overhead ex- penses and through the organize.- tion oi the Maritime Live Stock (Jo-operate we have eliminated j-the difference to 15 per cent. Can't {farmers see the protection they re- lcelve from their own organizations? In connection with co-operatlve selling our club ls e. medium by which we endeavor to assist inrm- ers through co-operative buying. By pooling orders we were able to bring to Uigg Station a carlot oi mill teed and ilour, saving thereby considerable cost to iarniers. i We also made up a ear lot oi hogs ior the Amherst Fair in which we were successful in securing sec- to Nov. 4.00. ond place with} prim oi $30.00 ‘This was extra. cash and good ed- vertlslng as competition was open to Maritlmes. In iuture these possibilities ior improving the ilnanclal income oi the tanner will be kept in view when an opportunity presents lt- seli. ‘ In conclusion it may be stated that however much we deplore such extremely low markets as we have at present we are looking ior- ward to the near future ior an im- p. vement when business and trade will right itseli. when that time comes there will be a scramble ior wealth with ‘high prom-s ruling. The unprotected and unorganiz- ed farmer will be the bone yard irorn which the pockets oi proilt- eering business and pmiesaioniil high class salaries will‘ be illled.| What chance shall we have ii all our co-cperatives are gone, our Egg and Poultry Association, our Potato Growers‘ Association, our shipping clubs? This is the time we should be anxious oi the ut- most loyalty to our clubs and co- operatives in general ior these or- ganisations moan the iuture luc- cess o1’ iarmlng. W. I).
