To the newcomers to our campus we'll tender a special greeting and trust that, beginning Saturday, they'll beccme Panther ~ meters for life...whid'1 we'll hopeis a long, " long time. To thereturnees we'll also give welcare and hope that all had a rewarding and pleasant vacation. As for ourselves, we now go about preaching to all and sundry. . ."When running downstairs, “ always, always, [always hold on to the bannister'.‘ As you observe a pitiable character limping about you can see the possible \ penalty for not following our advice. We will hasten to add, however, if you do insist on break- ing an ankle the best place'to do it is in Charlottetown, preferdily just outside the Security Office in Main. We cannot give too much praiSe for the obnsiderate manner in which we were treated there as well as in the subsequent time in hospital and, presently, from those wonderful people in the Rehab Centre! To turn to sports, and with no past games to comment upon, we'll just have to speculate on upcoming events with emplasis on those in th ~ immediate future. ‘ * In FOOIBALL, it would seem that the new ooad‘x Doug Crossman, anmAll Conference All Star in his bygone days as a Defensive Badc for UPEI, faces many prdalems Whidl,‘ hopefully, are not insoluble. If we have left off .any greats or near- greats, please, no behemoths in front of our desk on Friday morning with an aggrieved "Why did you leave me out?" as we made the list from a not—too—good memory. Of course, we'll also have the very talented Ossie Df—Ippolito whose educated toe gave us many points and frequently took us out of trouble last vear. How the boys will stad< up against mainland opposition will be indicated pretty well this Saturday when St. F.X. - fresh from a 13-9 victory over always powerful Saint Mary's, invade MacAdam Field for our first home game. We hope a large crowd will be there to chant the old familiar "Beat X...Beat X. . Beat X... ." as they dqeer the Panthers on. Only two. other football games at» home this year - Mount A. on 29 Sept. We are told that SOCCER is the world's greatest spectator sport but, unfortunately, it has not achieved the interest here that its supporters think Coach it deserves . Mulligan, usually' voluble, was reluctant to make an optimistic forecast in— asmuch as his team faces rebuilding and will be . composed mainly of fresh— men and sophomores. He claims he'll have a GOOD team in a couple of years but would only forecast that that, in 1979, he'll have ll men on the field. We hope he is right for we enjoy soccer and admire the players who certainly use their heads a great deal more than participants in any other sport that we know of. They open againstMount A. on Friday. In FIELD HOCKEY, Coach Barb Mullaly (who, by the way, we'll congratulate for winning a T.K.O. over a local scribe in the early summer) has nine players returning from last year headed by all star defencewcman Sandy Drysdale and bolstered by tho experienced Seniors, Brigid Connolly and Shelly Pepler as well as the two 1978 "Rookies of the Year" Andre Campbell and Mary Please bring I.D. In practise, goalie Marie Bradly is looking strong after her rookie season with a , 1.18 "goals against" average. With several other holdovers from last year, experience should be a big help and v the players are optimistic about making a playoff position. First game of . the season will be this Friday at 4:00 against defending diampims, the U.N.B. FEdsticks. We'd like to end off by; remarking we regret that we 'missed seeing former basketball coach Mr. Birger when he visited the Island this summer. We ' have always thought George is a real nice fellow.. .and we still do, As a matter of fact we now consider he may be too nice as his visit here seems to have resembled the second visit of the Pied Piper to Hamlin Town.
