At the request of a Guardian reporter the whole plan waa out- lined yesterday by Councillor J. Lorne Driacoll, chairman of the street: committee under whose iauperviaion the work in proceed- ng. Summeraide already has an enviable reputation for the qual- ity and extent of ill paved utreota. In fact few town: of comparable size can boast of the high pro- portion of its street: that are paved and in all care: the com- plete width of the ltrect, 1; pav- ed with proper curbing. The new paving program. of which the tint year'a portion will be completed in about a month. is the part of the total atreet work that in creatinl the moat in- tereat. Two miles of street: are being paved with' cement by Mor- risen and Macltae Ltd. The firm of Milton Hersey Co. Ltd., of Halifax is inspecting tho job and their daily report: to the Town indicate that the Town in re- ceiving a strength of cement well above the requircmanto of the contract. At present two block: of Arcana Street from Green to Ottawa and two blocks of Green from Spring to Arcona Streets have been com- pleted. Duke Street from the corner of Maple Avenue to Notre Dame Street la also finished. This is a Itreet. that ha: aeen rapid growth in the last two years, Only a few year: ago the north part of it was narrow and un- paved with no aldewalk and few dwellings. Now it is paved. has a cement sidewalk and is built up almost out to the Pope Road. It la now one of the finest streets in Town. The paving of Noire Dame Street from Cedar Street to it: junction with Water Street West is well underway. Before paving this street had to be built up with fill but when completed it will provide a large section of the Town with an all weather street and will also provide a secondary entry to the Town from the west. With this street paved it in ex- pected to take a lot of traffic that ordinarily travels on Water Street. Paving of Upper Summer Street and Clark Street from Central Street to Summer has been commenced. Paving these streets mean that a great amount of water and sewerage installa- tion: had to be laid and now these services are available to many places such as Notre Dame Street West which did not have them previously. Plans For Next You With a view to paving and year. two atreeta were completely rebuilt. On Harvard .Street East about 500 loads of rock and about 700 ioada of rock mixed with brick clay were filled in after it had been excavated. When this street in paved it will be pos- sible for traffic to proceed direct- ly through Town avoiding the main street with its heavy traffic. Duke Street from Notro Dame war given the name treatment in preparation for paving. Pond Street, which is I. Ihort atreet be- tween Ottawa and Harvard Streets running along the east side of the electric light pond. and was very narrow. was widen- ed this year by filling in along the edge of the pond with about 500 loads of clay. Tina will give the people living there a nice wide street fronting on the pond and later a aidewalk can be laid, In the vicinity of the new hoo- piral several new Itrocu have been built. In front of tho hoa- tpital tho aircoe recently named Beatty Avenue goon through the former Brennan property now owned by the Town. A Itroet has also been cut. along tho not ride of tho hospital, joining this ytreet with Clark Stroot which runs in the rear of tho horpltal and join: Summer and Granville Strreeta.
