ENVIRONMENTAL CALENDAR: compiled by Dan McAskill Feb. 3 — Rosemary Curley will be the guest speaker for the Natural History Society's meeting with the topic "Protecting and Managing P.E.I. Natural Areas for the Future". The meeting starts at 7:30 pm at the Farm Centre, 430 University Ave. Feb. 21 - Society Field Trip: Parks Naturalist Maurice Roy will lead a snowshoe walk featuring forest, beaver, and muskrats at the P.E.I. National Park starting at the Dalvay Interpretive Centre (adjacent to Dalvay Entrance [Note: there’s no entrance fee in the winter]). There will be a car pool leaving the Farm Centre at 1:30 sharp. Mar. 3 - The Society’s guest speaker will be Mark Arsenault with the illustrated presentation "The State of the P.E.I. Forest", a study he completed for the Island Nature Trust. The meeting starts at 7:30 pm at the Farm Centre, 430 University Ave. Mar. 7 - Society Field Trip: Society members and guests will car pool at the Farm Centre for the "Western Birding Venture", a birding expedition to western P.E.I. The snow date is March 21st. Vehicles will depart at 6:00 am from the Farm Centre rear parking lot, 430 University Ave. Apr. 5 to 11 - National Wildlife Week with the theme Riparian Shoreline Habitat: "Give Wildlife an Edge - Protect Our Shoreline". Apr. 7 — Jennifer Brown will be the Society’s feature speaker on "Bats of P.E.I. and Elsewhere". The meeting starts at 7:30 pm at the Farm Centre, 430 University Ave. Apr. 18 - Society Field Trip: Weather permitting, Dan McAskill or Jim Jenkins will lead a field trip and survey for "Night Sounds - Amphibians and Owls". The car pool will leave the Farm Centre rear lot (430 University Ave.) at 7:00 pm May 5 - The Society's guest speakers will be Kate MacQuarrie and Paul Walker on "Propagation of Rare Plants on P.E.I." May 23 - Society Field Trip: Gary Schneider will lead a walk celebrating the spring arrival of the warblers at Macphail Park. Trip starts from Macphail parking lot at 8:00 am and car pool leaves Farm Centre at 7:20 am. May 30 - The Society’s Bain Bird Count will present birders with an opportunity to venture forth and send their day's sightings into the Newsletter Editor. Jun. 2 - The Natural History Society will host an evening meeting at 7:30 pm at the Farm Centre, 430 University Ave. Speaker to be announced. May 30 to Jun. 6 - National Environment Week. See newspapers for events information. Jun. 20 - Society Field Trip: Gerald MacDonald will lead an interpretive walk at Baltic Bog starting at 2:00 pm. Car pool will leave the Farm Centre at 1:00 pm.
