The annual meeting of the Winnipeg Liberal At the Association was beld last week. meeting Mr. Richardson, a Liberal mem- ber of Parliament, who bas openly rebelled against Mr. Sifton’s leadership, took the lead in opposing Mr. Siften’s nominees, with the result that every one of them was defeated. Not only that, but men open ly and determinedly opposed to Mr. Sifion were elected to all the lead ng positions in the association. Joseph Martin was elected President, and he. we are informed, delivered aun address containing “a scathing arraignment of the Minister of Justice.” Three rabidj anti-Sifionians were, we are told, elected to the position of vice~Presi-~ devt. Further,—we quote the Winnipeg Telegram,— “A resolution was passed ostentatiously congratulating his rival, Mr. Martin on his success in British Columbia, while for Mr. Sifton there was naught but indignant denunciation. A reference to the rejec- tion by the senate of his Yukon railway contract provoked applause, His admivis~ tration ot the Yukon was bitterly con- demned. His rew personal organ here was repudiated in the name of honest liberalism. His opposition to the interests of Winnipeg was bitterly de~ nounced. His distribution of the patron- age was caustically censured. His sub- serviency tothe C P Rwas angrily in- veighed against. For failing to assert his Opposition to the St Andrews rapids job, the member for Winnipeg was called up- on to resign. Seldom has any public man been so aseailed and humiliated by his own party.” It is pleasing to note that honest and economical men in the Liberal party are openly opposing the shady transactions» the boodling and extravagance, of the Government. We hope, ere long, to see the same spirit exhibited throughout the whole country. Unscrupulous politicians ought to be taught that they cannot do as they like with impunity. —~-e- THE CRISIS IN FRANCE. It was supposed that the opponents of the government in France would have per-~ mitted M. Brisson to remain in office untiy after he had backed down in respect to Fashoda; #0 that the odiom resulting from the settlement of that matter would fall upon the Brisson Cabinet. But the sup- position has not been verified. Influenced by the army, the French Chamber of Depu- ties hastened to give M. Brisson his conge. The motives for this hasty action are very much mixed. It is certain that the French army leaders desire {0 overawe the Court of Cassation which has the Dreyfus case under review. It is certain that the mob of Paris, moved by the army leaders, is full of the feeling which finds expression in the cry ‘‘down with the Jews,” and that the mob was infuriated by M. Brisson’s action’ in re-opening the Dreyfus case after it wasZdiscoveredthat the evidence upon which Dreyfus was con- victed was forged. But whether or not the forced resignation of M. Bris~ A brother of } son has the deeper meaning that the French army leaders acd their political co-workers desire to fight Great Britain, and to that end have interfered to prevent the withdrawal of Marchand from Fash<« oda, has yet appeared. That the Chamber was merely carried away by the fury resultiog from the developments io not the Dreyfus case seems to be the more reasonable conclusion, France is being played upon by professional patriots, revolutionists, socialists, reactionary lead ers, free-lance journalists and sensation- mongers, and at the back of all isthe army led by unscrupulous men who prate about honor. What results may proceed from the crisis precipitated on [uesday last, no man can tell. om A MB ——— ——— vw" ‘T + NOTES AND COMMENTS. -- Passengers for this province com- plain very bitterly of being detained at Moncton and Point Duchene for twenty-one hours. —Heavy loss will be entailed upon farmers, grain companies, railway com-~ panies and others on account of the dam» age done to wheat by recent heavy and continuous rains in Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. —Mr.J. But we incline to the opinion that the newspaper “exponents” are merely setting forth the views of the government and preparing the public with excuses for the government’s avoidance of the duty of executing the man- date of the majority as expressed in the plebiscite. —It is remarked by the Farmers Ad- vocate tbat the enterprise shown by the Danes in developing their dairy export trade to Great Britain is most commend- able when we consider thatthe area of Denmark is only 15,000 square miles, or about one-third ths area of tbe State of Pennsylvania. It has only one large city Copenhagen, which bas 606,000 of a pop- ulation. The total number ofcattle kept is somewhat more than 2,000,000. The total population of the country onmbers about the same asthe cattle. — The recent death of} Harold Frederic the journalist, while under the tre .tment of chrietian scienists has directed attention tothe status of theese quacks ; avd the fact is made clear thatthe law is power- less to check the imposture. Such, at Jeast, is the case in Esg'and, where the Chris~ tian ecientists, faith healers, and the rest of the brotherbood, are legally entitled to undertake the treatment of patients, either personally or by correspondence, and to fleece their victims to the utmost extent ; but with one reservatiou—a healer is iiable to a charge of manslaughter, should a patient die while under treatment. it is reported that those who attended up~ on Frederic will be indicted for man- slaughter. -_ oO Use in place of Cream of Tartar and Soda.
