Sir Louis Davies Speaks on Import- ant Matters. specia! meeting of the Board of Trade last evening was of a most interest- ing cheracter. Mr. Horace Haszurd, President of the Board, occupied the chair, od in his opening remarke explained that the meeting had been called in order that Sir Loui Davies might have an opportun ity of cooferring with the Board upon the | j@portant matters of winter comm unica- tion, cold storage aud improved telegraphic arrangements, Sir Louis on coming forward expressed the pleasure it gave him to meet and confer with the Boardof Trade. He regretted, how-ver, that his stay in his native pro viace could not be prolooged, &s he had been summoned to (Quebec to prepare for the formal! opens ing of the Conference. He had to be in Quebec by the 5th August, and as he bad to call at Halifax en route be would pro- bably leave Charlottetown on Tuesday. Sir Louis then referred to the delegation sent to Gitawa by the Board of Trade last winter, and eaid that their ciear and business-like presentation ot the claims regarding winter Communicaticn, etc., had very materially strengtheoed his hands. The spleadid manner in which the delegates handled the matter of a secoud wmter steamer fmade each an inpression that he was able to obtain a grant of $180,000 for that purpose. The second steamer will be farger than the Stanley avd wil have a greater freight capacity. it was hoped thai the new steamer would be ready for service this winter bet this bas been found émpossible. However, the Stanley will beJdaid up at Charlettetown in October and thoroughly overhauled and made ready fer the winter’s work. It has desided whether the new be of the or twin type. Captain McEKihinney favors @ twin screw boat, bet Cuptaio Spain, Captain Finlayson, Engineer Mc- Millan and others to whom he vas spoken on the subject oppose the iiea. Upon this point be sought the adwice of the Board. A amaller boat bas albo been ob- tained for the ase of the Marine and Fish eries Department in Island waters, and the The not yet beee steamer shall single screw a tt | contract for ver coastraction has beeo ; let to Mr.Jehno W hite, of ¢ Le ary. Mr. W. B. Aitken referred to the plea- sure itgave him to bear from Sir Louis ov the important matters upon which he had just spoken. The motion was second~ ed by Mr. Thomas Handrahan ard unaci- mo sly adopted. The president, in tendering the vote of thanks, suggested toSir Louis that it wou'ld be advisable to have a cold storsge steam~ er make three trips to Ch srlotretown at a subsidy of $1404 a trip.
