A Boer town 1s not iaid out on sys- tematic lines, as one sees towns in Canada or Australia. The streets seem to run much as they please, or as_ the exigencies of traffic have caused them to run. I doubt if the plan of a town is ever drawn in this country. People | arrive and settle down in a_happy-go- lucky manner, and straightway build themselves a home. ‘Their homes are places to live in, not to look at. There is an almost utter absence of architect- ural adornment everywhere. As I sit writing this epistle my eyes can range over a large number of dwellings. They are nearly all alike—plain, square structures, plastered snow white. ‘There is a double door in the centre of the front, and a window at each side of the door. A stoep, about six feet wide, rises a foot from the pathway, and there is nothing clse to be seen from the outside tront. These houses look bare and bald, and are as_ expression- less as a biind baby. To me, most houses have an expression of their own. In an English town a quiet walk in the dawning, making a survey of the dwelling places, always leaves the im- pression that I have gleaned an insight into the character of the dwellers therein. The cheeky-looking villa, with its superabundance of ornament, is 2 monument in masonry to the suc- cessful mining jobber on a small scale. The solemn-looking, solid dwelling, standing in its own grounds, where every flower bush has its individual prop, where the lawn is trimmed with mathematical exactitude, and not one vagrant leaf is allowed to stray, $speaks with a kind of brick and mortar elo- quence of virtue that has never grasp- ed the sublime fulness of the Scriptural that Noah ured in checking: text which saith :—‘The way of the _ transgressor ishad! This is the ' home of the middle-aged Churchman, whose feet from infancy have fallen amid roses. He has never erred be- cause he has never known enough of human sympathy and human toil and human struggle to feel temptation The coy little cottage further on, sur- rounded by climbing roses snd _ sweet- smelling herbs, where the gate is left just a little bit open, as if inviting a welcome, seems to advertise itself as the home of two maiden sisters, who though passed the giddy girlhood stage, still have hopes of being some body’s darling by-and-bye. But ina Boer town most of the ] running lower toward the back, in EXAMINER, CHARLOTTETOWN AUGUST 8, 1900 sp aS ing pretentious or rakish about any cf them; no matter how riotous a man’s imagination might be, he could never @njure up a ‘wink’ from a Boer house though I have seen houses in other parts of the world that seemed to cock an eye’ at a passing traveller and invite him to try the door. ‘They have only two styles of roofing to the dwelling—either the old-fash- ioned gable roof or the still older kind of ‘lean to,’ the latter being nothing but a flat top, bigh at the front and order that the rain water may carry off rapid'y. ‘They paint their doors and windows a sober reddish brown, for your true Boer has an utter contempt tor anything gaudy or gay. He leaves that sort of thing to his nigger ser- vants, who make up for the master’s lack of appreciation in the matter of color by rigging themselves out in anything that is startling in the way of contrasts, for if the white master isa Puritan in such things the nigger ser- vant, male or female, is a perfect sy- barite. One of the most charming things noticeable about a Boer town is the plentitude of trees in the streets. They are often ornamental, always useful for purposes of shade. There is no regularity about their distribution; they seem to have been planted spas- modically, at odd times and at odd }positions. There is little about them ‘to lead one to the belief that the re- ceived overmuch care after they had been put in the soil. I have found a very creditable library in pretty near- ly every Boer town that I have visited, and it isa noteworthy fact that all of our most cherished authors find a place on their bookselves. One other thing I have noticed, which, though a small thing in itself, is yet very signi- ficant. She could not sleep for more tl s half an hour ata time without stariing up a;nd-crying out in excitement. “As she was grcwing weaker and weaker I became alarmed, and obtain- ed a box of Dr. Chase’s Nerve Foad. She used this treatment for several! weeks, and from the first we noticed a decided improvement. Her appetite be- me better, she gained in weight, the colour returned to her face, and she gradually became strong and well. I cannot say too much in favour of this rderful treatment, since it has prov- en such a blessing to my daughter.” Dr. Chase’s Nerve Food is a blood- our Queen and members of the Royal family have been hanging side by side with portraits of notable men, such as Mr. Gladstone, Lord Salisbury, Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Rhodes. Dur- ing the course of the war all kinds and conditions of Boers have had tree access to the rooms where the por traits were to be seen, but now I find that no damage has been done to any of those pictures. excepting those of Mr. Rhodes and Mr. Chamberlain. This has not been an oversight on the Boers, for I defy any person to find a solitary picture of the two last-named gentlemen that has not been hacked with knives. But the Queen and Royal family photographs have in every case been treated with respect.— London News. SCHREINER’S ATTITUDE. Mr. W. P. Schriener, the late Pre- mier of Cape Colony, speaking in the Cape House of Assembly recently, announced his intention to support yan amendment to the Government's treason bill, which, without disap- proving martial law, declares it con- tinuance in certain districts contrary to the rights of British subjects. He took the ground that the amendment would not hamper imperial action. The occasion was seized by Mr. Schreiner to make a long and eloquent explanation of his attitude throughout the war in South Africa. “If I have been guilty,” he exclaim- ed, “regarding the insufficient colonial defences, the military authorities have been ten times more guilty. I delayed calling out the volunteers until the invasion of the colony compelled it. I was not aware at that time of the weakness of the Imperial force.” He vigourously denied the existence of an Afrikander conspiracy declaring that sympathy with the Boers did not mean disloyalty, provided allegiance was maintained. Mr. Schreiner paid an enthusiastic tribute to the humane methods of Lord Roberts. “* a A CARD R. MACNEILL, M. D.,.
