The Bureau of Statistics report- ed today that failures during 1951's first nine months totalled 1.030. a rise of more than six per cent over the 966 recorded in 1950. and liabilities increased to 518,595,000 from 318.239.000. The average liability of bankrupt firms in the nine-month period amount- ed to 618.053 as against 316.842. During the first nine months there were 435 insolvencles of trading: establishments as compar- ed with (177 in the similar period of 1950, an advance of more than 15 per cent.-Failures in the ma- struction field rose from 71 to 04. Defaults of manufacturing enter- prises were unchanged at 103. Failures oi service businesses fell from 203 to 193.
