The UPEI SBN,Thursday, November 6,l980,page 6 Dal’s return punch ' Dear Editor: I would like to offer a response to the letter entitled “Dal -Delinquints” written by "The concerned, angry, and ripped- The accusations of a "party" in Marion Hall in which "free beer was thrown in” does not deserve comment, however, in the interest of factual off students of U.P.E.|J'reporting’ I Will address which appeared in the October 23rd edition of the Sun. This letter concerned the conduct of those Dalhousie University students who participated in a flag football game at U.P.E.i. during the October l7th weekend. The students were acc- ommodated in Marion, Blanchard, and Berna- dine Hall. As the Dalhousie organizer, and princi- pal promoter of the event, I am appaled by the irresponsibility displayed on the part of the author of this editorial piece of trash. The letter was an insult to the administration of U.P.E.|., completely un- fair to a very competent and hard working student union president, and Slanderous to Dalhousie University. The group of 80 Dal Students who travelled to U.P.E.|. as part of myself to this insignifi~ cant issue. Yes, 2 flats 0f beer and a bottle of Wine were indeed given to the Bronson House Bullies! These items Probably cost U.P.E.|.‘s student union 25 to 30 dollars; before Bronson House was to leave P.E.|. they would have collectively spent$3000 C for the weekend. Concerning tickets for a the Fridayinight event, I paid for 80 tickets at a COSt of $2.75 each and resold these tickets to those Bronsonites or ladies who cared to attend the function. Sixty tickets were sold and the _remainder returned to U.P.E.|.‘s door staff for resale. The insinuation-that Bronson House left U.P.E.|. without paying for their, accommodations is simply irresponsible. Prior to our departure on Sunday October l9th, I paid Phillip Brown $580. which was the outstanding balance that university's October from Blanchard and Bernadine fest celebration were not representing Dal. nor did they profess to. Rather, they were resid- ents of Bronson House, a men's residence, and Shirreff Hall, the women residence. All criticism of conduct should be directed at Bronson's 90 residents and not the 9000 students. I am somewhat confused by the questions posed in the letter such as “How did they (Bronson House) manage to land in residence?” and l'Were the residence students Hall. - _ We were amused by the claims of exceeive damage to the residences at U.P.E.i. since they were so « obviously a product of .Isomeone's imagination. A roof tile was damaged during the weekend by the Bronsonites; this tile is valued at $8. If U.P.E.|. wants to invoice us for this ’amount we will remit a payment by return mail and Blanchard will be returned to its former condition. Phillip Brown and Jim v Griffith should be commended for their efforts to build asked for their. opinion?” spirit within U.P.E.i. ‘ Did the author of the letter expect us to travel over 200 miles at a cost of $2000 in transportation alone only to pitch a tent on MacAdam Field? It would seem rather natural that the host university provide their guests with acc- ommodations on campus. Secondly, the residence of Marion Hall not only knew we were coming, they made the offer to billet us in their rooms Should we not be able to find more Suitable housang. through such exchanges as that which took place on the October l7th weekend. Never before in my dealings with other universities have i entountered a more conscientious, hard working student president, whose work for the university went as unappreciated as Phillip's does at U.P.E.i. It is my hope that the majority of students do not agree with the authors of the October 23rd letter as this would indicate that the U.P.E.l. student population are a bunch of selfish, ungrateful, and self-centered individUals. ‘ ' It is no secret to us here at Bronson House that your university has become somewhat apathetic in recent years. As a resident of Charlottetown l have seen the declining attendance at UPEI functions and I cite the cancellation of Pigs at the Barn last year as an example. Furthermore, had Bronson House not attended the Saturaday afternoon pub. at the Barn the bartenders would have been the only participants. The exhibition flag football game was designed to create a degree of spirit within UPEI which I feel it did; it is a shame that individuals have taken it upon them- selves to criticize Phillip's efforts. when UPEI travels to Dalhousie to play hockey, as is now planned, we .(Bronson House) will house the students in our residence and will throw at least one party to welcome them to Halifax. i hope that the actions of a few I UPEI students will not- leave the majority of UPEI or Bronson students with a bad taste in their mouths and that the hockey ,,_e,n tal in plann ingfla; ‘nqnber v F." ‘33"! 7». weekend will go ahead as planned. " ‘ Having been instrum- .‘ Of major fuhdtiohs”6vef'the years, it has become my view that irregardless of the number of hours invested in a project or the success of that project someone will find room'for ' criticism. I would like to thank those students of the University of Prince Edward island who made us feel Welcome in their university over the weekend and apologise to any individuals who were, in some way, inconvienced by our presence. I feel, how-'7 ever,~that most students enjoyed having us on campus 35 mUCh as we enjoyed being there and that we did not deserve being called. “maniacs” or “sons of Vbitches”. Furthermore I feel that certain students of UPEliowe Phillip Brown' and Jim Groffith an apology, not to mention the M residents of Bronscggngfr "“YoufiS-sincéretygc;LTLFwi;“~ Andrew M.
