It is whether this os- tensibly constructive arrangement wilk do any good for the Canadian consumer or whether it will benefit only a few rich.automobile manu- | facturers. According to Murray E. . Corlett. legal counsel for the Cana- dian Importers Association, these interests will be the sole beneficiar- ies. Unquestionably this will turn out | to be true if automobile prices are not soon reduced in Canada to their level in the United States. ~ In this connection the Winnipeg Free Press notes that some Canadian politicians, who should know better,’ : claim that Canada is fully committed to the deal and cannot force the manufacturers to cut prices. It is. true that power. to fix prices directly is a- matter of provincial jurisdiction; but there is nothing to prevent Parlia- ment reducing the tariff-on imported European ¢ars, and thus reducing their price here. That alone would have an immediate effect on the price , of Canadian cars. - Beat In the case of Britain a change in’ the anti-duihping law would produce % “the same effect. Re valuation on its exports; Britain could instantly cut its prices by a wide mar-- gin and this change in a dom statute would not involve any inte ith the tariff negotiations the .trade deal operate as it was intended to operate. The fears ex- pressed by Mr. Corlett and others can be relieved, if not entirely removed, if Mr. Gordon’s budget tonight shows plainly that the government proposes to let a truly competitive market fix the price for automobiles. Otherwise the free-trade deal will be. as Mr. Corlett expects, only. a method of imposing a disguised tariff and a state subsidy by the back door to benefit no one but Canadian auto- mobile factories which are owned for the most part in the United States. 20th Anniversary * .Our annual Festivals of Music have made such an impact on the cultural life of the Province that they are taken for granted by the younger generation. Yet it is only 20 years ago that they came into existence, and many of our citizens who were prom- _inent in the organization of this rich- ly-rewarding movement are with us teday, and still zealously engaged in ‘ ti Afi * sh he : — gs choruses and instrumental music, and | - its activities. Their example has been ah inspiration to others now asso- ciated with, them in organizing this year's festival, which gets under way this morning and which will be of- | ficially opened this evening at the Confederation Centre Theatre. This will be 20th Anniversary Night, and there is no doubt that there will be a large and appreciative audience. As indicated in our news columns on -Saturday, the festival contests are open to all residents of Prince Edward Island, and are being © held during the week at Charlotte town, Summerside and Montague. . Now for a backward glance at happened two decades ago, when a proposal for a competitive music festival was first launched at a Women’s Institutes convention in | June, 1945. This took the form of a resolution which. in the following November, came to fruitition with the . Organization of a festival committee headed by Mrs. Preston Beck. * Represented were the Institute branches of Central, East and West’ Maple Hills, Brackley Beach, Spring going under the capable direction of Walter MacNutt, A-T.C_M.
