Your hamble servant, PROGRESS. | Eldon, July 28, 1881. 72 o To the Editor of the Examiner. Dear Srr,—Will you permit me through lyeur widely-read columns te give your readers a short account of a trip along the ‘western shore of this Island. | The shores of Prinos Edward Island are now becoming famed throughout the world for their extensive lobster fastories. It ia ‘yeported that not less than 120 are in ‘active operation at the present time, and that if the business is presecuted much ‘lenger with the same vigor as it has dur- ‘ing the past two or three years, a lobster ‘will be as great a rarity as a crocedile in jour waters. Having had some curiosity to | witness the modus operandi, we called at a \few of them as we passed aleng. At Campbelton we found Messrs. | Matheeon and Thompson busy gathering ‘them in. Seme distance to the south, near Cape Wolfe, Messrs. Bell & McCallum ‘have establishments for a similar purpese. ‘A little further along. Mr. Cairns has erected large and extensive buildings, which are known as Cairnaville, West Cape, where this excellent shell-fish is pre- served. Another is situated on Dunville’s premises, and Mr. Longworth is rushing the business at West Point. As the traveller pazses factory after fac- tory along the shore, the idea is forced ‘upon him that the businees must be an ex- ceedingly lucrative one, before so many would embark in such sn enterprise. But it is a lamentable fact that men all over the Island, without experienes or know- lecge of the business, having a little money aud an immense amount of seif-assurance, rash inte packing lobsters and putting into the market an inferior article, who wevld be more protifably employed in the long ruv, by stumyping ent a green farm or grow- ing turnips for feeding hogs. It is te be regretted that the market should be stocked with an article unfit to be eaten and thereby destroying the repu- tation of this delicious fish, as well as that of the experienced manufacturer, who puts up @ first-class article, warranted to keep in lauy climate. It is time that the attention of lobster eaters was called to the class of goeds which are found oa the shelves of many of eur grocers, and be particular to secure those of a well-known preserver and a reliable brand before purchasing. Probably many ef your readers might feal interested in a ruaning description of the manuer of dealing with the lobster, from the time that he is startled from his lair until he has passed between the deii- cate and refined lips of all lovers of shell fish. When a factory is located in one of our coves, a number of fishermen take what are known as ‘‘ traps,” and sink them in deep water varying from 6 to 15 fathoms. They are placea about 4 fathoms apart, and number from 120 to 200 traps te a beat, which is usually manned by two remaining are pressed out and thenfoovered. The cans are cenveyed te the seaie:s, who securely solder the heads and prepare them fer the bath reom. They are then laid in traya end deposited in the bath boilers until they are prepared for hermatically sealing. When thoroughly tested they are painted, labelled, and packed in cases, ready for market. The law requiring all spawn and small loksters to be thrown overboard has been very gonerally complied with. But in cen- sequence ef the short season allowed and the storwy weather this summer, neither the fishermen or packers have realized the returns which they auticipated. The De- minion Government should extend the period fer lobster fishing at least one month longer in the fall, and thus enabie both parties to secure sufficient remuneration for their labor, and thereby make up for the less ef the lobsters which are thrown If the leading lobster packers of P. E. Isiand were to hold a Convention in Charilottetewn at an early day, and prepare a document setting ferth by cogent reasons the disadvantages under which they laber, there is ne doubt but the prayer of their petition weuld be accecded to at the next meeting of Parliament. Ia cannection with eur trip, we weuld refer to the fine farms aleng the shore, where evidences are seen of the benefit of lgbsier shells in the culiivation ef the soil. The extensive fields and luxuriant crops plainly show that more attention is being paid to agriculture since the establishment of lobster factories around eur coast. Thacking you, Mr. Uditor, fer yeur indulgence, I remain yours, &s., A TRAVELLER. July 1881. TE © Rn, Venner’s Forecast for August.
