The | diary describes women and children taking | the plades of massacred busbands and brothers in @zrgo’s heroic six days’ de- fence of Anmiakh against the Turkish siege. The position becoming untenable, Gargo decitted to leave the defence to the women, himself leading his troops ona forage for wood and ainmunition on Aug. | 33rd. The women defended the positiun | fur .wenty-fuur honra, but finally yielded tu numbers. They is-ued from the town with therr children and carrving babies on their backs. Gyrgo’s wife, finding escape impossible, stepped on a rock and cried: “Sisters, you ust chouse between falling into the hands of the Turks and forgetting your hnéban ts, homes, religion and honor, or follow®)g¢ my example.” With Meee Sorda, holding her baby in her arn, elie dashed herself front the rock into the abyas yawning at ii« bave. The other women and children silently followed her example until the ravine was filled with corpses. The last women who threw themselves down fell unhurt upon the bodies of their companions. The scene struck the enemy with horror, About 50 women and 100 children were taken prison- ers and endured torture rather than betray Ggrgoand his brave followers. QGgrgo’s heroic wife was called Schakhe, and it is declared that the mame deserves to be known throughout Europe. A despatch to the London Daily News from Constantinople states that the re- ports of the Armenian outrages are cou- firmed from various sources. A Dazzarist priest from Van says in an interview that he has not been able to discover the cause of the massacres at Sassoun. He believes that the victims pumbe ed 2,000, and that the regular troops were the murderers and violators. The despatch adds that since the Sultan invited President Cleveland to send a delegate with the Armenian coni- mission, he has requested General Blunt Pasha to go to Bitlis on a similar errand. General Blunt’s health, however, prevents him from accepting the invitation, The Advertiser has a despatch from Constantinopie, saying that owing to the President’s declining to send a delegate to inquire into the Armenian troubles, Tur- key has requested England to nominate a mission, The Missions Catholiques at Lyons has received a letter from Monsignor Mutel, addressed from Seoul, the capital of Corea, announcing that all the French mmission- aries in Corea, after great hardships, have succeeded in reaching Seoul. The letter adds that all the christian villages in Corea have been pillaged and burned, and num- bers of christians have been massacred. —_—_—_"!, ANOTHER TRAIN HELD UP. As the east bound Texas and Pacific pas- senger train was nearing Mary’s Creek, eight miles west of Fort Worth Texas, on the evening of the 7th, it was brought to a atandstill by a danger signal displayed on the trestle. The engineer was covered by three men who boarded the cab and order- ed the train to be backed up half a mile. Then the fireman was covered and ordered to break in the express door. He refused, bnt after the robbers fired several shots he burst in the door with a pick One of the robbers then kept the fireman and engineer covered while others wert into the express coach. Fort Worth is the end of the ex- press run and the sefe door was open. One of the robbers rifled the safe while othere kept guard over the messenger. Twenty minutes later the train was in Fort Worth. The exact amount the men secured is not yet known, but it is said to have been near $40,000 in money, gold bullion en route from San Faancisco to Washington and Texas Pacifi: checks. OO - e-aae NEWS NOTES. The clerical memberst of the London School Board on Thursday elected Lord George Hamilton chairman by a vote of 29 to 26. The German Bundesrath is considering a proposition to increase the duty on cot- ton seed oi] iv about 250 per cent. This will hit the Luited States another hard blow. The London street railway carries school children at certain hours in the morning and evening from one part of the city to anvther for one cent fur the trip. A cheap rate begets travel. The Quebec legislature has been in session two weeks and over a hundred bills, public and private, have been intro- duced. In the quantity of their work there is assuredly no evidence of neglect on the part of Quebec’s law-makera. Tae legislature of Quebec has given the xix months’ hoist toa resolution reducing the sessional allowance from $800 to $600. The leader of the government aad the leader of the Oposition both voted against the hoist, but the majority of therr follow- ers placed a bigher estimate on the value of their services to the province. The holding of a public meeting in the capital of the Empire, to hear the views of some of the aibaeee to the Ottawa Conference upon the leasons to be learned from it, shows the interest with which Lord Jersey’s report has been received in England. It alxo is a striking evidence of public belief in the holding of such con- ferences as the best means of promoting imperial] and commercial unity. The jury in the inquest on the bodies of the victtms of the recent accident in Montreal by which three men lost their lives by the falling in of the street railway building said they “believe that the falling in was due to the fact that Ed. C. Hop- and Soseph McLaughlin, foreman, failed to take rea~onable precaution in the con- struction of the work, and that they can- nct be excused for having neglected to fulfil thiadutv.” Warrants were issued at once for the three accused. German comment npon a recent epceeh made by Emperor William suggests a sus- icion that the Kaiser,in his sdmiration for the autocratic Alexander, who has lately passed away, may permit the new Czar to place Russia in the lead of Ger- many as far as the freedom of representa- tive government in either country is con- cerned. pointing to greater freedom, the signs from Germany indicate that Emperor William wishes to concentrate all the functions of government in himself. The British aristocracy have taken a great fancy for municipal honors, The Marquis of Bute is Mayor of Cardiff, the Ear! of Warwick is Mayor of the ancient city from which be takes his his title, and Lord Loensdale has just been elected Mayor of Whitehaven. Lord Rosebery was the first chairman of the London County Council, and the candidates for the Lov- don Schoo! Board at the recent election included a duke, @ yiscount and baronets and generals galore. It would be a good thing for Canada if her successful busi- ness men, the only aristocracy we have, would take an equal interest in the ad- ministration of municipal affairs. It is not easy to deny that women bay business capacity when we consider how | much of it is needed in order tog+t up a} | decent family dinner. When a man | grace at his own table he feels, let up hope a becoming gratitude to Divine Providence | but he does not always bear in mind that the immediate channe! of that Pr- | videnee has been, in mo t cases, a woman | The woman in question might, indeed, b tempted sometimes to interrupt his ori<on as did stout old Ethan Allen those of the clergymen who was offering a thanksgiv ing for the capture of Ticonderoga—” If you please, Mr. , don’t negleet to. mention that I was there too! To the average man who is what i: called in the country “a good provider,” it perhaps geems.as if all hoasekeepiny «onsi-ted 'n taking a eufficient amount 01 meat and vegetables, throwing them int an oven, and presen’ly taking out—a_ din- ner, The fact that soup requires a cer- tain amount of c: oking, and beef a par ticular time, and pease a given interval, and pudding a proper period, and that all that all these viands have to be so planned that they shall ail be precisely ready, pip- ing hot and done to a turn, at the precise moment; and, that during this proces» cach separate item must be duly mixed or stirred or flavored or tran-ferred from dish to dish, no two being treaved just alike— all this does not at first occur tohim. I: is only when some sudden change put+ the whole matter into the hands of some untrained Bridget or Mary Ann, perhaps reared in a factory, land not knowing a fry from a fricus ee, that a woman’s work in the hou-~e begins | t look like a business training, as 1 is ; It then may occur to him for the first time that his wife, who could never yet mak: her weekly accounts balance, can at leas do the equally difticult task of putting to gether the items of a dinner, and makin; them come out even. It would be asy to go on and shew how in other ways women exhibit what ar practically business habits with'n thei recognized demain. Take, for instance, « mother seeng her five children off t school in diff-rent directions on a winter morving, each properly hatted and muffied, and shod, and, gloved, and luncheon d, with due and separate regard to Mary” cold, and Ellen’s weak eyes, and Johnny’ tendency to an excess of pie, and all the various perils that impend in ditterent directions. See her in the m.d~i of that battery of questions: ‘Mother where is my right mitten?” “Mother, I can’t find my India rubbers.” Mother, you were to write to Mixs Jones about the geography lessun.” ‘Mother I have pulle: this button off. Mother, how fer did yon fay it was from theearth to the moon ?’ And all this while, at the same time, papa is in a hurry for his fival cup of coffee ; and papa forgot to speak to the plumber yesterday, and therefore the bell does no: ring it the kitchen to-day. Papa may be = very gooi busine<s man, but will he seri- ously declare that anv complication is like- ly to ocv-ur in his office that will exceed the complication of this little drama whict his patient spouse hasto rehearse every morning of her life? EEE HORSES IN Tak WEST, Wm. E. Curtis, an excellent authorits in the Ch:cago Record, gives the status ot the horse in the Rocky Mountain region as follows :— “ A hundred head of ordinary, unbroken ranch horses were suld in Denver the other day for $90 and the freight charges. They were brought in from Wyoming by a speculator, who found he could not ge: rid of them, and let them go at this vric: in response to a jocular proposition made him by aman at the St. James’s Hotei A well-known horse Gealer here tells me that Lux & Miller, of California, who hav: eevera! ranches in that State, also in Utal. jand Idaho, recently drove 250 head o1 good horses inte the Snake River Valley. Tiaho, and .urned them loose there fv: the benefit of whomsoever it might con- cern, rather thaa feedthem during the coming winter.” This doesn’t look as though the Ameri- can people are suffering from the ordinary horre the Canadian farmers has to sell. ——————EEEEEEE eee SUMMERSIDE EXPUORKTS, Scummensipe, Dec. 5.
