Urlder the policy the red- eral Govemment agreed to pay the cost of trans rtetlon for lambs by rail. but n this Province, as practically all the transfers were mode otherwise. the cost to the Federal Department will be prac- tically nil. SUPPLY OF RAMS The Federal Government also promised lo supply reins where fif- teen (15) ewes or over were es- tablished. This number. accord- ing to arrangement could be made up of the contribution of two or three breeders where e. ram could be easily used. I am pleased to report that u to the present time thirty flocks ave been established in this way. and I am quite con- fident that between twenty or rty more were also established, but the owners. for some reason. did not make application for the bonus in sufficient time to secure its benefits. While the closln date for applications was set a the latter part of October, we are having quite s. number applying at the P18501114 time for information in this connection. Taking it on the whole, I am fully confident that the sheep 1n- dustry of Prince Edward Island in the year 1942 will have reached the 25 per cent increase. which . we had in mind for it at the early and claims have been made by some that they eon do I00 sheep in an hour. These various methods should be investigated by our Federal and Provincial Live Stock Fieidmen. Perhaps a simple method is to a1- low the tablets to break down in milk. using one tablet per ounce. shake well, and drerwh the sheep with four ounces, or to boil some water, use a handful of linseed meal per uart and use the clear liquid ln pace of the milk as el- ready stated. We are from our Department, giving the matter of equipment for dosing with the tablets every con- sideration. I may say that we were in contact with a young men in Nova Bcotia. who has dosed thous- ands of sheeézand has taught many farmerste it. He is using, af- ter trying e number of methods. e home made pilling gun and has found it a most efficient, rapid and safe method. In any event, the treatment of parasites is an important part of our policy, and it is our intention to promote this control with all vigour during the next year. GRADING OPLAMBS Another part of our policy has had to do with the encourage- ment of the grading of lambs. and our Depart/men‘ offered. during yell‘. 50c for Grade "A" and 25c for Grade "B-I" lambs on the rail. ‘Phis has not received the support. for a number of reasons, that- we had hoped for. Our policy also covered another important phase of work. that is the treatment for parasites. Our officials also distributed substantial quantities of these t lets for this purpose. I am qu te confident that the work in this respect has been of a very beneficial nature. lmd it is our purpose i0 prosecute this work with the utmost vigour during the coming season. In connection with the administration of Phenothla- zine. there seems to be a tendency on the part of many sheen breed- ers tn riepmrl m departmental men for this treatment. The figures presented above indicate to you the great need of care with regard to our wool. Too large an amount over 0000 pounds was infested with burdocks, seeds and other refuse. CONTROL OI‘ BUIRDOCKS It is difficult to understand why farmers, through careless methods will allow a ten cent reduction per pound to take place in their wool when this can be easily avoided. The control of burdocks is not n difficult matter and regarding seeds in the wool this is usually a matter of carelessness on the part of the feeder. We cannot very well criticize markets govern- lns prices when through our own neglect we deliberately lower our to the extent indicated. 846 patrons shipped .wool this year to the Sheep Breeders’ Associa- n. Before closing I would like to make reference to the passing. during the year of two great men in the sheep industry and the agri- culture of this province. I refer to regrettable passing of George Boswell of llrenchfort and of W. H.,MacGregor of Central Lot l6. For years I have worked with these two men. I can only say tlley were worthy and honourable sons of the soil. Mr. Boswell made an outstanding contribution to exhibition work in this province, and the results of his efforts have been Spread abroad throuvh many flocks through Eastern Canada. He was one of the best exhibitors and best sportsmen. He took his knocks. and he had many of them. with the same spirit that he took his winnings and good luck. I-fis passing st a comparatively early age has been a rent loss to the agriculture of tlls province. He will be missed in this meeting to- day, but his work will long endure. Tlw some. too may be said of the late Mr, MacGregor. a man of greet accomplishments in agriculture in many different. fields. a man of keen vision and of greet abliilv as an oraaniver and advisor.
