Talismans Are Common W ith Professional Law breakers. Burglars are firm believers in talismans and luck brin ae rs and nearly every pro fessional ib trglar has a emall: article with: out which he rarely sets upon ‘erlb rode job. On well hai to the police, has for his talisman the shod hoof of a donkey, which longed to his father, and so great is his belief in its powers of protection and luck-bringing that he has been known to turn back from a job he had intended to work because his talisman had by so%e burglar, once be tuisadventure been left at home, says a writer in Tid-Bits. The moon plays a highly important part in criminal superstitions. Not one burglar in fifty will venture out ona hosue breaking expedition on the night of a new moon; while the halo around a full moon, which is popularly but error- eously supposed to foretell rain, is a sight which gladdens the heart of Mr. Bill Sikes. Some burglars have a lively herror of certain numbers, and will never enter a house or a shop which Is that particu- lar number in its street. The ominous numbers are generally those of the police- men who were the first to capture the burglars. On the other hand, if a burglar falis into the hands of a policeman, but man- ages to escape, the number of that police- man is always a favorite with him, and he will feel easy in his mind when break- ing into premises bearing it. Even the most experienced burglar will turn away from the house where he finds a black cat sitting upon the doorstep; even if he has spelt in learning particulars about the house and its inmates. To break into premises under the nose of a black cat would be running deliberately into the arms of the law. Neither will a burglar enter a house where the door- knocker is muffled or draped with crape. Pickpockets are even more superstitious than burglars. It is one of the element- ary rules of the ‘‘light-fingered fratern- ity’’ never to pick the pocket of a cross- eyed or a club-footed person. Finding a twisted coin in a purse will frequently induce a pickpocket to throw away the purse and contents, for such a thing, if kept, is considered to assure nine months’ bad luck or the thief’s early arrest.— Pittsburg Chronicle Telegraph. days Au Injadicious Clerk. A prominent photographer of Boston hired a young man who, he thought, would make an affable assistant. The clientele of the hcuse was among the smart set. A well-known resident of Beacon street was in correspondence with the firm about some cabinets. He was blest with superfluous flesh. His weight was on the verge of three hundred pounds. He was bashful about his avoir- dupois, wanted the utmost secrecy in taking his picture, and, as he said in his letter, ‘‘he didn’t want to be looked upon as a rare animal.’’ An engagement was made date set. When the customer Was met at the door by the man. Ioud noises, cries of ‘‘You’re crazy, “I’m insulted,’’ were heard by the pro- prietor. Running out he saw the fat‘man leaving the room. The Jatter’s face was white with rage. His huge bulk moved with graceless haste down the stairs. ‘‘What’s the matter?’’ yelled the boss at his new employe. ‘*Nothing. ’’ “Nothing! Each industrial class elected one member of the House of Rep- resentatives for every twelve persons, and elected one member of the Senate. Repre- sentatives were elected for a term of one week, and senators for a period of two weeks: Thus the experience of conducting an election was enjoyed eight or nine times in the course ef the two months. The balloting was carried on in an ap- proved fashion, and so the members of Mr. George’s little commonwealth were prepared to understand not only what elections mean, but all about the con- duct and machinery of elections, the ne- cessity for pure and honest elections iu a self-governing community, and the proper safeguards to protect the exercise of the elective franchise.—From ‘‘ Vaca- tion Camps and Boys’ Republics,’ by Albert Shaw, in May Review of Re- views. The Magnet in Surgery. While the X rays are undoubtedly able accurately to locate a foreign body, such as a recdie, imbedded in the flesh of the hand, yet they are powerless to remove it, but electricity is equal to the occa- sion, and offers means in the electro-mag- net of accomplishing this. A curious in- stance of the removal of a needle by a magnet is reported from Cherryfield, Me. A woman pierced her hand by a needle, the eye going in first’ and the point breaking off, leaving a piece about three- quarters of an inch long imbedded in the fiesh near the thumb. A slight cut was made in the skin over the place where the fragment was located, and a powerful electro-magnet devised at the local electric light station applied. The attraction of the magnet for the steel needle drew it out at once, causing it to cut its way through the flesh, broken end first. The magnet used was tem- porarily devised for the emergency, and consisted of an inch piece of soft iron about 1 foot long, wound with ordinary maanet wire. and attached toa 110-volt wronis He will take no Risks. Congratulations poured in from various well-known commercial houses, and these were accompanied in many cases by substantial presents. There were about adozen different kinds of soap, nine samples of various infant foods, three bottles of beef extract, a powder puff and seven boxes of violet powder, four or five different kinds of night lights, eight babies bottles, three elaborate works on how to bring up young children, speci- mens of Jinen and flannel for infant at- tire, and advertisements innumerable of everything that baby could possibly need. Besides these there ame proposals from a dozen insurance companies to insure the life of the jaby and the whole family on especially advantageous terms, pros- pectuses from a California emigration society anxious to ship the baby and the rest of the family to the land of peaches and pumpkins at the lowest possible rates, leaflets from private gentlemen who wanted to lend any sum of money from £5 to £50,000 on no security what- ever, together with advice, sympathy and ood wishes enough to last a family a undred years.—London Fame. An Effective Fireman 5 Cap. The most effective fireman’s cap ever known has been invented by a woman. It is made of fine strips of asbestos mold- ed to the shape of the head. It is held fast in place by a band composed of rub- ber and asbestos, which makes it air- tight. It weighs only 16 ounces, and can be carried on a person's arm without in- convenience. Perfect protection to the eyes without interfjsing with the view of surrounding objects is insured by plates of mica being placed in the eye- holes. A silk sponge, through which no smoke can enter, but which permits the plentiful ingress of air, fills an aperture for the mouth, and the cap is simply ad- justed. In a recent test a fireman at- tempted, without it, to enter a smoke- house. After eight seconds he had to return, being half stifled, and gasping for breath. He then put on the asbestos cap and went back and remained thirty-five min- utes in the thick smoke, with no possi- ble chance of getting air from outside. It is claimed that this head covering will enable a man to remain in a stifling at- mosphere for an hour, without the slight- est fear of suffocation.
