Na ae 4 THE TAMWORTH HOG, Talk about the “bacdn bog” has brought the Tamworth into ‘notice, it be- ing supposed to make bacon beyond any other of the improved breeds in point of quality. Naturally the diseuss- ion excitzs cariosity about the breed, ae it is yet so little represented ia this coun— try that very few have had opportunity to eee it,and a correspondent writes us:to give him some information concerning it. The Tamworth derives designation from from the to vn of that name on the borders of Staffordshire and Warwickebire, En¢- land and is the most recently deve oped of the British breeds. The first effort it improvements was by Jonas Webb the improver of the Southdown sheep, about 1855, but the breed has been mach im- proved since his day. It is specially noted for the large portion ot jean meat which it produces, but this is due, of course, to the feedioy of which it bas ben accns- tomed for a number of generations, and it is hardly to be doubted that any cf the improned breeds would take ona similar habit of body if it were fed on nitrozenous food chiedy and was madeto rely ov pas- turetoa large extent. The Tamworth is prolific, hardy, quick growing and early maturing. The color ‘is red or brightehestnyt, inclining to ; brown 48, they grow oldet. The:black spots haya, ali been bred out of the breed.’ In frame they are quite -marsive with long deep bedies, amall beada, erect ears. and noxe inclined to be long.
