Gains-with some outstanding exceptions-were fractions to a little more than a point. Trading was very quiet with the volume only 610,000 shares, com- pared with 670.000 Friday, the low- est in more than s week. Oils and rails were the leaders, and steels also came in for a share of favorable attention. Leading utilities were narrowly mixed but the plus signs had an edge over the minus signs on average. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks advanced .4 of a point to 68.2, the highest level since Sept. B. The industrial and railroad sec- tions of the average advanced .5 of a point, and the utilities were up .2 of a point. At Montreal MONTREAL. TOBACCO SCARCE IN ELK. Shortage of tobacco in the United Kingdom has reached an all-time peak with retailers limit- ing sales to ten cigarettes a customer. This is s consequence of the severe drop in British tobacco imports during the past. three years, a measure to conserve dollar exchange. In spite of sharp excise-tax and price increases, tobacco consumption has declined only moderately from a monthly average of 20.86 million pounds in 194d to 18.71) million in 1947 and 18 million in the first half of 194B. The relatively small decline in cosumption. in view of the severe reduction oi imports, was accomplished by drawing on stocks on hand. Stocks in May, 1968 were 1M6 to 18.72 million in 1947 and they were 39d million, and by May. 1947, they were further re- duced to 331 million pounds. Sales Agents For: TH liRD R. M.
