Perpetual Motion.—The “perpetual motion” machine invented by Mr. B. | J. Forster, of Glenwilliams, has been honored with a lengthy description in the Scientific American. Briefly, the machine consists of a number of cylin- ders containing air, which, expanding and contracting as it is aflected by the constantly varying temperature outside the cylinders, creates the force that is used to drive the mag¢hinery. As the American says, “this machine wil! hardly be classed among perpetual motion machines ot the usual types, us it has an ever varying force of nature behind it which will cause it to operate} so lony as heat and cold aternate, 01 until the machine is destroyed by wear or time.” Disinfecting Power of Streams.—In avswer to Dr. Emmerick, of Munich, who advocated the priociple that air and water in motion were the best and cheapest methods of disinfection, at the German Association for Public Sani- tations, Prof. Virchow of Bertin stated that experiments made by the Prussian Government resulted in establishing the fact that within one crbic centi- meter, taken from the river Spree above Berlin, 10,000 germs capable of de- velopment were found. At the city itself the number was 950,000, be!ow Berlin 4,800,000, and further down a Charlottenburg as many as 10,180,000. Professor V irchow expresses the opivion that open water courses in cities of 100,000 inhabitants aad upward should be free from the introduction of im- purities, and reminded his hearers that it is a mistake to suppose that fast flow- | ing streams carry away everything of a noxious nature. es a Household Hints. No other complaints are so insidious in their attack as those affecting the throat and lungs: none so trifled with by the majority of suffer- ers. The ordinary cough or cold, resulting perhaps from a trifling or unconscious ex- posure, is often but the beginning of a fatal sickness, AYER’S CHERRY PECTORAL las well proven its efficacy in a forty years’ fight with throat and lung diseases, and should be taken in all cases without delay. A Terrible Cough Cured, “In 1857 I took a severe cold, whieh affected my lungs. I had a terrible cough, and passed night after night without sleep. The doctors gave me up. tried AYER’S CHERRY PEC- TORAL, which relieved my lungs, induced sleep, and afforded me the rest necessary for the recovery of my strength. By the continued use ef the PrcroRAL a perma- nent cure was effected. I am now 62 years old, hale and hearty, and am satisfied your CHERRY PECTORAL saved me. Croup. —A Mother's Tribute. “While in the country last winter my little boy, three years old, was taken ill with croup; it seemed as if he would die from strangu- lation, One of the family suggested the use of AYER’S CHERRY PECTORAL, a bottle of which was always kept in the house. This was tried in small and frequent doses, and to our delight in less than half an hour the little patient was breathing easily. The doc- tor said that the CHERRY PECTORAL had saved ei darling’s life. Can you wonder at our gratitude?
