It was a night of great- enthusiasm. Wherever the eye glanced it rested upon multitudes of people, elderly ladle s with and without escorts; old rnen who recalled the gait of boyhood days and ltnged for the hours long, long agoin order to celebrate as the young were doing. Dashing girls, in smart attire w ere en masse. There were hundreds on the streets who as a rule are not present at ordinary celebrations. The decorations-well, they were simply i grand, in many instances extremely hand- some andin all cases appropriate and in keeping with the spirits( the hour. From fthe mast heads floated Euglands glory and rlags and pennants were crowded for position and 'evidenced some brilliant grouping. They hung across the street and protrnded from the windows and balconies. Bunting and streamers added to the color which was so lavishly displayed. In many cases the whole house or place of business was dotted with tiny flags. Any indivi- dual with Boer lcanings would have cer- tainly found himself in far from congenial ‘T -society. The bursting of a. rocket from the Prin- -cess pressed the button of the reception; Almost at this same instant a detachment r \of men under command of Capt. B artlett fired n salute of 21 cannon. The boom of -the guns was the signal that 32 of the Boys who left our shores over a year ago had covered themselves with glory and were returning to meet the embrace of :heir friends and loving countrymen.
