Cam. Tooliss and Mrs. Tooker have returned from the United States. PREMIER FARQUHARSON and Mrs Farquharson were in Pictou Saturday visiting their daughter in that town. ‘lf lr is expected that Hon Judge I-Iod ~ the Sf. John law school this winter. Mn. Janus B. ALLAN, formerly tc-aeher in West Kent school, and who has been employed for about two years in the Rosslnad post oiiice, has been ap- pointed mail clerk on the C. P. R. His run will likely be_ between Vancouver and Calgary. In a private letter to a friend in this city,Mr. Allan _says :-“I am sorry to leavelRossland as I feel sure it is the best ’place on the contincnt for a young man. It, has advanced wonderfully during the past year. All the working mines improve with depth. The Island boys are holding their own. They are at work and seem quite please- cd with the prospects." The GUARDIAN congratulates Mr. Allan upon his ap- pointment. THE schooner Sam Slick, captain Ogilvie, arrived here on Saturday eve- ning. Captain Ogilvie reports that he left Charlottetown on Thursday morn- ing for Stonehaven, Bay Chaleur, but after getting to Moscow was obliged to put back for shelter to West Cape, anchoring in the bay with ballast badly shifted. Here the anchor chain parted and the vessel swinging around before thick snowstorm and unshippetl rudder. A survey will probably be made in a few days to ascertain the extent of the damage. The Sam Slick is owned by parties in Windsor, N. S., and is char- tered to load grindstone at Stonehaven. Bay Chaleur. She is 90 tons burthen and was not insured. THE GUARDIAN has much pleasure in announcing that the Canadian Steam- ship Co., Ltd., of London. G. B., has favored the shippers of this Island with a directsteamship this fall, and the fact of theirsending a boat into the St Law- rence in the month of December, goes to prove their enterprise, and faith in the resources of Canada. The shippers of this Island should patronize this company, and give them all the en- couragement possible in return for their willingness to risk their ship in these ‘waters so lete in the season and thus further the interests of the farmers of this Province. In the event of a satis- factory patronage being accorded this company it is but reasonableto presume 'that they may consider the advisability of making regular sailings here next season. The fact _of the S. S. Galicia making connec ion with the Great _Western Railway of England is also a decided advantage. No doubt the ven- ture will be worked to a successful i=sue by the popular freight agent, Mr. W. W. Clarke, and the General Manag- ers for the Province - Messrs. G. D. Longworth & Co.
