It will be | noticed that the increase of the revenue is | relative ly much greater than the decrease of the number of saloons. But it is said that the saloon keepers are well content to pay the larger sum in consideration of the great- er profits they make, and that the change gain to them. One effect of the high the lower class of drink- the temptation to set up unlicensed groggeries is increased. On the whole, perhaps the high license is a benefit to the community. In one of the Southern States the liquor dealers advocate a high license, in their own and the public interest. Something of the kind may now perhaps be tried in Toronto. ——— 2 Pe ' | lisa license is to close ing places, but fhe pork industry of the United States is heing everdone, and unless there is a call from abroed for some of the large surplus on hand, prices must rule low for some time to come. Pork packers are doing a much larger business than last year. The amount packed during ‘he first two weeks in November, was 500,000 barrels, which is 240,000 barrels more than was packed during the corresponding time last year. In the eastern markets of Maine the price of cured hogs is too low to cover the cost of growing and fattening them. Under these conditions. it is better for the farmer to turn his money and labor into something else; and, for the present, raise only pork enough for family use. Mr. Parnell, in a letter to Eugene Kelly, of New York, says: ‘* The remittances which you have sent were most timely, and the hearty manner in which your movement is being taken up throughout the umion is a source of the utmost gratification, encour. aging to my colleagues and myself, as well as to people of Ireland generally. We now hold that position, the oceupation of which we have always conside: ed to be an indis pensable preliminary to the commencement of a successful movement for the restitution of legislat ve independence to Ireland, and | we cannot doubt a happy 7 speedy issue |to the struggle.” Mr. T.
