f Gtoaales of Life. @ne stande in robe af white Beneath the sunshine, in her eyes A bappy, untold secret lies, Pe well-spring of delight. She holds a posy in her band Of roses red, of roses rare, Love's latest gift to one so fair As any in the land. We look at her and smile And te our hearts we softly say, Can biiss like hers endure alway, OG» but a little while? Will faith cling close through sun and snow, Will love’s rose garland keep it 1ed From bridal couch to graveyard bed ? Alack! we cannot know! One stands Alone, apart She wears the sign of womanhood ! Sharp grief hath drained of al] its good, Her hungry, empty heart. To tend a grave she counteth best; She turns from us who love her weil, And wears the yellow asphodel. Death’s flower, upan her breast, We leok at ber and Aigh, And softly te our hearts we say, Will grief like hers endur® alway, Or lessen by-and-by? Will woe weep on through sun and snow ? Or will the asphodel give place To flowers about a blushing face? Alack ! how should we know? One sits with thoughtful eyes Down-dropped on homely work, a smile Upon her tender mouth the while Her busy task she plies, Some blessed thought enchains her mind ; How wide and deep her musings are, High as the height of topmost star, Anda 'ow as human kind ! She wears upon her breast A mild-white lily ; God hath given To her a foretaste of His heaven, An earnest of his rest. She came from out the furnace flame Of sorrow strong to help the weak, And gifted with good words to speak In time of grief or shame, Wo look at her and smile, And te our hearts we softly say, Good work like hers endures alway, Beyond earth's little while ; Beyend earth's round of sun and snow, Beyond the height of topmost star ; And where her harvest waits afar ; God knoweth, and we know! —All the Year Round. Lord Nelson and His Sealing- Wax. When Lord Nelson gained the great victory at Copenhagen, he silenced the land batteries by his broadsides ; but he found out that one or more of bis ships were in rather shallow water; it was therefore deemed expedient to send 4 letter to the Crown Prince of Deamark to demand a cessation of hostilities in orjer to spare further effusion of human blood, The letter being written and neatly folded, Lord Nelson sent for a stick of sealing-wax. It so happened that he who was sent on this ecom- misssion had his head taken off by 6 caunon ball. This was reported to Nelson. “Sefd another messenger to the wax,” said he. It was observed for him that there were wafers on the table. “Send for the sealing-wax.’’ he repoated. Jt was done, and the letter was sealed. Some one said, “May I take the liberty of asking why, under so hot a fire, and after such an accident, you have attached so much importance to acircumstance apparently trifling.” He replied, “If [had made use of a wafer, it would have been still wet when the letter was presented to the Crown Prince; he would have inferred that the letter was sent off ina hurry, and that we had some very pressing oceasion for it. The wax told no tales.’”’ Looking Back. We look back upon onr past and we thiok, ruefully enough sometimes, of the mistakes we have mada We see how, in some iastances, we were too quick, too impetuous in action, and either did a wrong thing altogether, or else a right thing in an entirely wrong way. Ineither case the action was mistaken, and we can see now, clearly led upto a disagreeable consequence to owrselves which, otherwise, could not have taken place. We see low, in other instances, we were too slow in action, and from excess of caution, missed that tide in our affairs which, if taken at the flood, would surely have borpe us on toa better fortune than any we have yet reached. Something of this experience is inevitable in all livea. Itisa part of the spilled milk of life, which itis the vaimest of all vain things to cry over. Crying can do vs no good, but muchharm. There is nO necessity, in reference to such an experience, to cultivate a rueful, repent- ant, self-accusing tempor. It unfits us for the work of today, and darkens to-morrow with the same ruefulness, the same unavailing repen- tance, the same painiul self-accusation. —Rev. J. Kay Applebee in Boston Commonwealth. he Floatine Suits. Buoyant clothing has been devised by a Londoner, and seems to be attract- ing some attention in that metropolis. Threads of cork are interwoven with cottov, silk, or woolen, machinery which slices the cork to the required thinness forming part of the invention. From these new materials elothes of ordinary appearance are constracted which bear up the wearer when com- mitted unexpectedly to the water, The worth of the new fabrics was thorough- ly tested by throwing three persons clotbed in them from the end of a pier. it is suid that they remained jn the water over an hour without discomfort.
