WE DNESDAY »JUN kK 30, (1886. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Hingston School. MR. J. MACDOUGALL, TEACHER. Sir,—The semi-annual examination of Kingston School (South Wiltshire) was held last week in the Methodist Church, which is within a short distance of the school house. This was done because the school room was toc smali for the occasion. There were present sixty pupils and forty visitors. After the examination an _ enter- tainment, consisting of readings, singing, recitations and dialogues, was given by the pupils. Then several prizes were distributed | ‘ among the deserving pupils, after which they were addressed by cwo gentlemen, who spoke in very high terms of “what they had just witnessed. It was closed by sing- ing ‘God save the Queen.” Yours &c., GEORGE CRUWYS, Sec’y of Trustees. June 28, 1886. The “Dodger” Question. Srr,—Mr. Richard Walsh has deemed it proper to drag my name into the present political contest, in connection with some circular or ‘‘dodger,” of which he says: *‘I wish to say that ‘the circular is genuine, and was adopted in the Orange Hall, Charlotte- town, on the 15th of April last.’ I have not taken any active part in the present political campaign, and, therefore, { think it does not savor of the gentlemen for Mr. Walsh to bring my name into his party's petty squabbles. When Mr. Walsh assures the public that the circular of which he speaks, was adopted by certain parties, whose names he mentions in_ his letter, in the Orange Hall, on the 15th of April ‘last, he is talking of a matter concern- ing which he cert: inly cannot know any- thing. I emphatically deny that any such meeting took place. I am inclined to be- lieve that some knavish wag has been amusing himself with Mr. Walsh's (gulli- bility. I call upon Mr. Walsh for his proffered proof. Yours, J. M. Duncan. June 29th, 1886, aking Powder vs. Cream of Tartar. It will not help the matter any if, to avoid the impurities and poisons in the cheap baking powders, the housekeeper returns to the use of cream of tartar and soda. The cream of tartar of the present day as found on sale at the grocers, is quite as impure as many of the baking powders. Tests made by the public analysts have de- veloped the most astonishing venality on the part of cream of tartar manufacturers and veudors. Twenty-seven samples, claimed by dedlers to be pure, were analyzed. They were fiund to contein from three to ninety- three per cent. of alum, lime, ete. Samples’ of soda analyzed showed the same extent of adulteration. Not only is it unsafe to use such leavening agents in bread, biscuit or cake, beeause of their deadly effects upon the system, but they cannot be relied upon to produce light food. The result of their use will be heavy bread, yellow or bitter biscuit and cake. Most of the baking powders and bread preparations of the market are made from the very cream of tartar above described, or from alum, which is poison, or from phos- phates derived by disgusting processes from the solution of old bones in sulphuric acid, so that their usc and the use of the adulter- ated and impure cream of tartar are attend- ed with the same dangerous or unsatisfactory results. The only way to overcome all difficulties attendant upon the use of a leavening avent would seem to be in the selection of a baking powder of a thoroughly well established reputation, whose absolute purity, wholesomeness, and effective power as a leavening agent have been confirmed beyond contravention. ‘The Royal Baking -Powder unquestionably meets the mark. Indeed, it has been found to be the only baking powder upon the market that is free from lime, alum and phosphates, and chemically pure. Prof. Mctt, the United States’ Government chemist, has explained the reason of this absolute purity. It exists in the new methods of refining cream of tartar, owned aud employed exclus:vely by the Royal Baking Powder Company, by which only can the chemically pure article be produced. A portion of Prof. Mott's report is worthy of reproduction in this connection : ‘*The Royal Baking Powder is absolutely pure, for i have so found it in many tests made both for them and the U. 5. Govern- ment. I will go still further and state that because of the facilities that Company have for obtaining perfectly pure cream of tar- ter, and for other reasons depending upon the proper proportions of the same, and the method of its preparation, the Royal Baking Powder is undoubtedly the purest} and most reliable baking powder offered to | the public. ‘‘Henry A. VOL. 19.—NO. 54. From Limb to Limb. While playing in Lord & Henderson's — mill, Ottawa, on the moruing of the 26th, at bor named Godroi Larin, who had been frequently forbidden to catch hold of a re- volving shaft and swing timself s!owly around in a contrary direetion, did so, al though directly warned by the foreman. This shaft, which is about two inches in diameter, was enclosed by a few planks nailed on top of one another. The top piank was split aad possessed a sharp edge. This rude fence was about four feet high. The youth clambered over and curled him- self round the shaft. His coat sleeve be- came entangled in some way, and in an- other moment he was being swuag #round ata terrible rate in a contrary directivi. At each rotation his legs came down on the sharp-edged planking with terrible force, and after turning round a few times the left leg was torn off below the knee. With such violence was the linh severed that it was thrown ten feet on to some planks. The awiul volation still continued, and the next round the other leg was torn off just above the knee. This limb fell down a trap hole into the river. The only spectator quickly stepped che engines. When removed it wes found that the boy’s body was dreadfully crushed and the shoulder broken. He died shortly afterwards in intense agony. mt > «<i of Scott's Emulsion of Pure Cod Liver Oil, with Hypophosphites Is 1a0re reliable as an agent in the cure of Consumption, Chronic Coughs and Emcia- tion, than any remedy known to medical science. It is also very palatable. ne The average of earnings per head in the United Kingdom is £35 4s.. and exceeds that in the United States (£27 4s.) and that in Canada (£26 18s.) But it is actually ex- ceeded by the average in Australia, which reaches apparently the amount of £43 4s. ver head, and is che highest in the world, Still the rate of carnings in the new coun tries founded by the Anglo-Saxon race ap- proximates to that of the mother-iand ; but the average rate of the Continent of Europe is only £18 1s. In other words, the British rate is more than double. France is the only European country which at all ap- proaches the United Kingdom in this res- pect, and together with France might be classed the little countries of Belgium, Hoi- land and Denmark.
